a tad off topic, but does anyone know the name of that song that played as the intro of the Mets/Yankees game tonight?
I'm pretty sure it was the outro to "The Inside Man" as the credits rolled, but I'm not positive
EDIT: google pwns:
"The opening credits song Chaiyya Chaiyya is originally from the Indian movie Dil Se. It is sung by Sukhvinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi, lyrics by Gulzar and music by AR Rahman."
so n/m

Mussina def. should be on there. You have to have a Tigers pitcher or two, i think Verlander should have made it over Rogers.
Liriano is probably going to be voted in as the extra guy, he leads the league in ERA for Starters (1.99 I believe) and is 9-1. 7/2/2006 9:21:18 PM |

we all know the fans vote on these, so what's the point in complaining that there are people better out there. Half of these picks are based on popularity alone. 7/3/2006 8:12:37 AM |

They should let the fans pick, at most, two or three players. Coaches and baseball writers should pick the majority of the roster, and they need to get rid of the rule that each team has to have one player represented. And while we're talking about things that are wrong with the All-Star game, I really don't like how it determines home field advantage for the World Series. That should definitely go to the team with the best record. I'd continue speaking the obvious, but I have to get back to work. 7/3/2006 9:04:57 AM |

^agreed, agreed, agreed.
I like the managers and sports writers picking the entire team, and then fans picking the starters.

He pitched well against the White Sox in his one start against them. Ozzie didn't want to cut into his drinking time by actually looking up stats so he picked him.
** Interestingly enough the players do vote (thought it doesn't mean anything) and they picked the same starting team as the fans in the NL

The Royals basically have no one worthy of being an All Star. Teahan is a joke, but has been playing better of late. DeJesus is probably their best everyday player, maybe Reggie Sanders. All of their pitching is horrible. Maybe one of the guys from the pen might have had the stats (Burgos maybe - don't feel like looking up the stats?), but Redman didn't deserve a spot. 7/3/2006 10:14:06 AM |

i think they should make an exception to the "every team must be represented rule" when you have got a team as bad as the Royals
i have seriously not seen a team this bad in my lifetime even the detroit tigers of a couple years back had a lot more promise at the time than this team 7/3/2006 10:21:10 AM |

^Funny how you all say that but the Royals have really turned the corner lately.

^ I know as well as anyone on this board how well the Royals are playing. I live in Kansas and get to see/hear them all the time. I realize that they've been playing better ball, mainly against the NL Central, but they still don't have a legit All-Star.
The one player per team rule needs to go. Back when the Braves were absolutely horrible and they always got one shitty player on the team, it did not make me care any more or any less about the game. It's not like the few Royals fans out there are going to care that Mark Redman made the team. Plus I bet Redman feels like a shit knowing that a guy like Mussina/Liriano/Verlander will not make the team, but he did because Ozzie had to pick someone from the Royals.

Quote : | "All-Star Team
It was fascinating to be a small part of watching how the All-Star Team was selected. Many fans may be under the impression that the manager sits down and makes his pick. That is far from the case.
Leading up to last weekend, we had prepared page after page of stats and player rankings, along with projected pitching rotations. Ozzie spoke with managers of other teams.
As you know, fans selected the eight starters. Players vote on the the next eight players, one per position. Players also select eight pitchers, five starters and three relievers. This leaves seven players for Ozzie to select. Of the seven, four must be pitchers, and he had to cover the four teams -- Bal, Oak, KC and Cle -- who did not have a player among the fan and player choices. So, really, Ozzie had three picks of his own and used them on Konerko, Jenks and Buehrle.
Because the players selected Jim Thome as the backup first baseman, Konerko was needed as the only true first baseman on the team. Jenks received a lot of support from the players vote as well and obviously is one of the top relievers in the game.
Grady Sizemore was Ozzie's easy choice as the Indians rep (and he also gave the AL another center fielder), Miguel Tejada was the Orioles selection so that he had another middle infielder to play with in terms of game strategy. And Barry Zito and Mark Redman were the pitchers selected to represent their teams.
Starting pitching was an concern. Three of the five starters chosen by the players are scheduled to pitch Sunday, which limits them to at most one inning in the ASG. So in Buehrle, Zito and Redman, Ozzie was adding pitchers who could give him innings should the game go to extras.
Pitchers like Mike Mussina and Curt Schilling are having great years but are scheduled to throw Sunday. Adding them to the team would not solve the innings issue.
Hope that explains some of the behind-the-scenes concerns with picking the team. It was sure an experience to sit in on the meetings, watch, listen and learn.
In the end, it's Ozzie's team, and he believes its a team he can win this game with ... after all, we want home field advantage." |

^^ Man that is pretty shitty if Rogers is the starter for the AL. It might be good for the NL if they can score some runs off him, but Rogers does not deserve the honor of being the AL starting pitcher after all the shit he's pulled. Might as well just put Brett Myers on the NL squad now and let him start too.
