This deal will never happen, but just to get the party started in here...
A-Rod on the move to the cubs? Now There's A Trade Rumor
This is a hell of a trade rumor, and it'd be wrong not to pass it along. According to the blog Bleed Cubbie Blue: "The Cubs are reportedly "in discussions" with the Yankees for a deal in which the principals would be Aramis Ramirez...and Alex Rodriguez...This deal, if it happens, might also include Jacque Jones, and other lesser players including prospects on both sides. This same source told me that the White Sox are "close" to acquiring Andruw Jones from the Braves; the price would be Brian Anderson and young pitching. That deal would also make sense for both sides. If the A-Rod to the Cubs deal happens, also expect Todd Walker to be moved (maybe to the Tigers), and at that point A-Rod moves back to SS, Ronny Cedeno to 2B, and the Cubs get a placeholder 3B until they can either sign one or trade for one in the offseason."
Just to reiterate, all of the above comes courtesy of Bleed Cubbie Blue. My own personal feeling is that the rumor did indeed originate from a legitimate source. Now let's take a closer look. As you may know, A-Rod's contract deserves a webpage unto itself. As far as I can tell, the Yankees, or any other team, would owe him $16MM annually through 2010. Based on projections, that's pretty close to fair value. Aramis Ramirez was given the unfortunate ability to opt out of his current deal and become a free agent after this season. Even if 2006 is an off-year, I think he could top the three years, $33.5MM he's owed in the deal. 1060west sums it up: Ramirez will probably test the market given the weak class at the position.

Now, my input. that deal would be stupid on many levels for the Yankees.
Names on the block this year:
Tejada Abreau Dontrelle Miguel Cabrera Zito Smoltz carlos lee soriano
anyone I am forgetting?

with injuries to Sheff and Matsui, they are not going to move Arod's bat from the lineup. If anything, they will go after pitching first before they trade their position players. 7/3/2006 6:19:58 PM |

Tejada would be an even worse defensive 3B then A-Rod (who is pretty damn good for it not being his natural position).
I still can't get over the fact that a gold glove third baseman moved positions for a subpar defensive SS to keep his space.. the Jeter gold glove was a farce.. 7/4/2006 1:55:56 PM |

oddly enough, carlos lee for zach minor, kyle sleeth, and marcus thames has been rumored
though i think he'd be a bad fit for the tigers, and sleeth is going to be a monster one day
this was brought to you by the detroit sports talk station, they are usually pretty on

8 player deal between reds & nationals
reds lose: lopez (ss), kearns (of), wagner (p) reds get: majewski (p), bray (p), clayton (ss), harris (if), thompson (p)
Quote : | " The playoff-hopeful Reds also acquired shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris and pitcher Daryl Thompson from the last-place Nationals.
Clayton most likely would replace Lopez, who made the All-Star Game last year. The Reds gave up reliever Ryan Wagner, a first-round pick in 2004 who has struggled the last two seasons.
Cincinnati's bullpen has dragged it down the last two months, giving up the most homers in the majors. The Reds came out of the All-Star break at 45-44, trailing St. Louis by four games in the NL Central and in the middle of the wild-card race.
A week ago, the Reds sent a minor leaguer to Seattle for Eddie Guardado, a former All-Star closer who will move back into the role in Cincinnati. That move allowed the Reds to shift struggling Todd Coffey back into a setup role.
New owner Bob Castellini, who took control of the Reds in January, promised that the club would be aggressive in the trade market if it was in contention at midseason.
The eight-player deal with Washington -- run by former Reds GM Jim Bowden -- marked a clear break with the team's cautious approach of recent years.
Cincinnati has had five consecutive losing seasons, its deepest slump in 50 years. To stay in contention -- and above .500 -- the Reds have been trying to overhaul a bullpen that has ranked last in the NL much of the season.
Majewski, a 26-year-old righty, was 3-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 46 games. He led the Nationals with 79 appearances last season and had a 2.93 ERA.
Bray, a 23-year-old lefty, was the 13th overall pick in the June 2004 draft and was considered one of the Nationals' top pitching prospects. He was 1-1 with a 3.91 ERA in 19 relief appearances this season, his first in the majors.
In order to get them, the Reds had to give up two of their everyday players.
The 26-year-old Kearns was hitting .274 with 16 homers and 50 RBI. The right fielder was considered one of the team's building blocks under Bowden, who was fired midway through the 2003 season. They listened to offers from other teams over the winter, but decided to hold onto Kearns.
Lopez, also 26, is hitting .268 with nine homers and 30 RBI. He failed to improve upon his breakthrough season last year, when he made his first All-Star team. " |

clayton was an all-star too in '98
i think the bigger message is that the reds have been very conservative in their roster moves. the new owner wants to revitalize the team and said that he would be very aggressive if the reds had a chance to make the playoffs. the reds got some great pitching which is what they desperately needed for this season. the reds have been in a slump lately and maybe this will push them to take back first place in the central.

That isn't too bad. Gotta give to get. If the pitching help improves them to solidify their wild card spot then I say go for it.. Guardado last week also will help...
I don't remember his name but I recently heard an interview from the Tigers GM who traded John Smoltz. Asked if he would do it again he said he'd do it 100 out of 100 times. Doyle Alexander gave them a chance to win a World Series. For a small market team you go for it EVERY TIME you have a chance...

This is a fine time of year.. too bad Gammons isn't around to get everything wrong right now.

Rumors are swirling that the Red Sox are interested in current Philly, former Yankees, former Cub Jon Lieber, who has been terrible this season, but with slim pickings in the pitching dept he might not be a bad pickup. 7/19/2006 12:34:20 PM |

On Mike and Mike this morning, Jayson Stark was saying that Greg Maddux will be the biggest "name" starter available. He won't go to an East Coast team though and in reality only the Dodgers, Padres, and Brewers seem to be good fits. Stark said the Dodgers are his most likely location. It would be cool if the Braves got him back, assuming he could be a somewhat effective starter the rest of the season. Thomson is horrible and Hudson has given up 5 plus earned runs in 5 of his last 6 starts. He'd atleast be a reliable innings guy unlike Thomson. 7/19/2006 12:54:37 PM |
abyopp All American 1043 Posts user info edit post |
i think Maddux will ultimately wind up with the Mets. they need another starter and he is obviously boys with glavine, not to mention the postseason experience he holds.
obviously he has struggled, especially as of late, but if my Cubs could muster the offense that the mets boast this season, Maddux would have a W-L record of over .500. 7/19/2006 1:22:02 PM |

Even though Giles is a decent player, just a horrible leadoff hitter, i think he is gone if he isn't on the dl by the trading deadline. I wonder if the possibility of trading Giles is the reason why he hasn't been put on the dl yet.
