let me help you more than that...

GAIM is a good one, my fav on windows really
miranda <- customizable as crap, just some work to do it
adium x if you have a Mac, i assume ur on windows tho (my fav overall)
then you have AIM and AIM Triton, and the various add-ons like DeadAIM that you can find all over the web

[Edited on July 6, 2006 at 11:14 AM. Reason : aim triton is worse though]

I use AIM 4.7 with the ads removed. It works great, is fast, and not flashy like some of the other IM clones

i would recommend using gaim. its not pretty but it works without all the crap. I dont recommend using an old version of aim since its probably susceptible to exploits (i.e. spyware, viruses).

But since I mostly use my PC, I stick with Trillian, which I've stripped down to basics through skins and turning off all the useless little icon things every program seems to ship with these days.

if you're willing to invest quite a bit of time into miranda, it can be everything you've ever wanted out of an IM client.

that being said, it requires quite a bit of effort, and isn't for most people

With the amount of Adium recommendations it sounds like it's time for you to invest in a Mac.
