I've been doing it for the past couple of weeks, and it's awesome. I always had problems with finding the right running shoes that wouldn't hurt/blister my foot after running 6 or 7 miles.
I did some research on the Internet and found a group of people who promote barefootedness, including running barefoot. I decided to give it a try, and had to work up to running longer distances because my feet were pretty tender due to wearing shoes all my life. I started off running only 1/2 mile before my feet became sore, and now I can run up to 3 on a paved surface. My feet feel much better than they ever did when running with shoes.
I also bought some cool barefoot running shoes made by Vibram (called Vibram FiveFingers), whose soles are tough and rugged, which allow you to run even longer on rouger surfaces such as gravel roads.

it would seempretty unlikely that though shoes would fit most feet, unless they're somehow customized to each buyer's feet. in which case i'm sure they're $$$$$$ 7/10/2006 4:24:53 PM |

I would've gladly spent a lot of money on a good pair of shoes, but never pursued it that far. I went to a few specialty shoe stores that tried to look at my feet, make measurements, look at my walk and suggest a pair of shoes that they think would fit best.
But now I'm pretty happy. 7/10/2006 4:27:05 PM |

I read an article about this last year. A lot of olympic runners were starting to incorporate barefoot running into their training because it forced them to run differently or something. It's supposed to make you noticeably faster. 7/10/2006 4:35:46 PM |

^ yea, supposedly running/walking barefoot utilizes a lot of muscles in your feet that are barely used when wearing shoes, so your feet become stronger. my soreness wasn't caused by the rough surfaces on the bottoms of my feet, but rather they were sore because i was using these muscles that were very weak. 7/10/2006 4:43:35 PM |

I noticed that one time I went barefoot jogging and got back home, the tendons over my feet hurt like a motherfucker (the ones between my joints and my shin, whatever they're called).

they're only $65, but you can get them on eBay for cheaper
I only wear them if I am going to be running over rougher surfaces or downtown where there is lots of debris/glass that could cut my feet
When running through the park, or on a paved surface I usually just run completely barefoot.

I have my doubts as to whether or not this is really true. Apparently, this idea caught on after people saw many Kenyans train for marathons this way. The theory is that it builds up the muscles in your feet, which most of us don't exercise. I'm not certain whether or not this is true...I'll stick with my shoes for now, thank you very much I don't want hookworm, tetnaus or anything like that. 7/10/2006 5:16:42 PM |

i try to run/walk/jog barefoot whenever possible...i grew up on a farm, and i hate that my feet have gotten so soft from wearing shoes in raleigh (but considering the alternative of stepping on glass, still-lit cigarettes, and/or dirty needles, i've been sporting sandals or flipflops)
as for my arches/knees...i don't really see how walking barefoot is THAT bad for them...i mean, human beings didn't always wear shoes (but i concede that they have since before the invention of pavement, which is murder on your arches/knees/back) 7/10/2006 7:36:06 PM |

^^ it may be stupid to say this, but I am not feeling any discomfort from running barefoot now, as opposed to when I would wear running shoes. I can't say that will last forever, but at least i see it as a good temporary solution

Well, you realize how important it is to support your arches when you've broken your foot 3 years in a row.
First time, playing soccer and running on uneven ground Second Time, senior week at myrtle beach(enough said) Third time, running on the beach barefoot
Each time I broke it when my arches were not properly supported. Running barefoot is fine if you have good arches. 7/10/2006 7:40:45 PM |

As far as I can tell when you run barefoot (I know when I do) you run alot more on the balls of your feet. It seems to me that I go faster and don't get as tierd as fast. Even when I walk around barefoot I walk a lot more on the balls of my feet.
I can't stand running with shoes on. I can probably run a good distance on a smooth paved road, better running on grass and the best is running on sand. It is really nice to get a mix of some running on the firm wet sand and the really soft sand. You want a good way to work every last thing in your legs run on soft sand.
For things you might step on
rocks (not that bad, gravel can be a pain but if you build up your feet, no problem) broken glass (be really watchfull around any college apartments) worms (whoopie fucking doo, wipe your foot off on the grass or curb) bugs (see worms) mud (stay on the pavement) hot ground (you get use to it) slippery ground (I slip way more with my sandles on) dirt between toes (stay on the pavement, jump in puddles) plantars warts (they suck, get them removed, no problem) molds (never had a problem with this ever) bacteria (oh no I got my feet dirty I'm going to die) dog shit (watch where you step, but this is really disgusting) road kill (are you walking in the middle of the road?) ants (advoid ant hills and there is no problem) grass (grass is heaven to walk on barefoot)
