The movie starring Andre Benjamin and Big Boi (outkast) comes out on August 25th for those of you who havent heard.
I wasnt sure what it was going to be about, but theres a trailer out for it now here:

looks pretty good, Andre has played some good roles in other movies and everything Outkast does nowadays seems to turn to gold. I'm looking forward the most to the album that comes with it, I've already heard "The Might O" and "Morris Brown" off of the album, both of which I cant stop listening to.

I don't like what I've heard of the soundtrack so far. I also thought Rosario Dawson was supposed to star in it. I'm not getting my hopes up about this. 8/8/2006 9:23:41 PM |

I just got through listening to a leak of the album, and here are my first impressions -
First off, I'm kinda scratching my head. Some of the songs I think are complete genius, while others had me wanting to listen to ATLiens or Stankonia.... As advertised, it's a musical, so the songs follow a fictional story in sequence - kinda like Love Below. And also like Love Below, Andre is singing his ass off. I dunno, I thought Love Below was fucking fantastic, but I got tired of Andre's melodies on this album. When Andre does rap, though, the results are tight. And of course Big Boi does his thing when given the chance - I just wanted to hear more of him. Honestly, I hope they break up after this record. I feel like they're going in such different directions (well, that Andre is going in such a different direction) that Big Boi's music would be best experienced on a solo record, a la Speakerboxx. I mean, "The Train" might be the best song I've heard all year, and it's just Big Boi ripping it up with Sleepy Brown on the hook. And Andre of course has the talent to maintain a successful musical career solo as well. Maybe the sum of the parts is greater than the whole in this case...anyhow, I digress...
Sonically, a lot of the musical elements from Speakerboxxx/Love Below are present, just with a bunch of swing and ragtime sounds added to the mix. For some songs it really works ("Morris Brown", "Peaches"), but for others it kinda made me cringe ("Idlewild Blue", "When I Look In Your Eyes"). That being said, though, the good definitely outweigh the bad here. OutKast is on some new shit again, making a new sound as they've done on every one of their albums, always pushing the envelope.
While I think this album will be rather polarizing, most of the longtime OutKast fans will probably be satisfied - mainly because if you've been a fan since Southernplayistic... you've come to expect a different concept and sound with each of their albums. This one just takes that pattern to a whole new level by being a rap musical set during the prohibition days. Who the hell came up with that concept anyway? 8/15/2006 1:30:54 AM |

I was pretty into the idea of this movie until I saw the preview. Doesn't look like anything special now, though. I'll let other people watch it and see what people I trust in such matters are saying about it. 8/15/2006 2:21:12 PM |
