I just ordered the new ESPN mobile phone, the Samsung ACE (rebadged SPH-A900).
I know the phone is great, but has anyone used the service? I've screwed around with it at Best Buy, but I'd like to get some feedback from people who actually use it on a day to day basis (if there is anyone here who does) 7/16/2006 11:00:53 PM |

not to hate or anything, but shouldn't you have done this before you ordered the phone? 7/17/2006 12:22:30 AM |

I've got 30 days to return it if I don't like it, so no, it really doesn't matter when I did it.
The phone was $99, the service starts at $39.99 a month. 7/17/2006 7:10:48 AM |

You are in Raleigh you should be fine as long as you stay within a big city. I seen their coverage area I wasn't too impressed. Honestly I think the actual service looks too good to be true. 7/17/2006 7:39:49 AM |

I know you were looking for someone that has used both, but I can vouch for the a900 (ace) on the sprint network as being a great phone for use around here. The ONLY drawback is the short battery life -- I pretty much have to charge every night.
I'd imagine the ESPN Mobile app would only increase the battery demands as well - but maybe they've come further with the firmware to lessen drain. ESPN Mobile itself is a great little application - I wish there was a way for me to 'upgrade' my a900 to put that on it.
Hope you enjoy..let us know how it goes. 7/17/2006 5:29:05 PM |

Now you can join the other 10,000 or less people in the country that have ESPN Mobile. 850 the Buzz was saying the sales were terrible. Other than that, I don't know much about it. 7/17/2006 7:34:21 PM |

Wow, they sure have come down in Price. When ESPN Mobile first started, the phone was around $400 and the service was $65/mth. 7/17/2006 7:54:17 PM |

Yeah, the massive drop in price is why I decided to go for it. I needed a new phone, and $100 aint bad.
The phone should be here today, so I'll have to go to a sprint store and get all my info ported to the new phone, but I'll let you guys know what I think. 7/18/2006 4:46:54 AM |

Wow the price really did drop. If I really needed non-stop sports info like a writer or an announcer, I'd get one, but otherwise it is not that useful IMO. I can get all the info I need on the internets. 7/18/2006 12:43:28 PM |

It's only six months old, but already analysts are called ESPN's mobile service a bust. Merrill Lynch & Co. entertainment analyst Jessica Reif Cohen, who had once estimated that the service would attract 240,000 by year's end, now figures that it will only draw 30,000. She estimated that it will cost the company about $80 million this year. (That's a loss of $2,700 per customer.) The service delivers scores, sports news and video clips from the sports channel to customers of Sprint/Nextel with compatible cellular handsets. " |

What about this service made it any different than getting score updates from other mobile services??? The video clips is the only thing I can think of. So they were basically asking people to buy a phone for $100 and pay an extra $40 a month just so they could see a special ESPN newscast or a nice highlight that the person could just wait until they get home and catch it on ESPNNews or on ESPN.com.
Bad idea IMO. I'm a sports freak and don't like missing stuff...but even if I had the money I wouldn't get this. I am thinking about upgrading my plan to get some kind of sports updates on my phone though. 9/28/2006 10:56:41 AM |

I just think the service is just way too much for info that you can get online on the CPU, television or radio. At least the four letter decided to cut their losses before it got worse. 9/28/2006 4:45:39 PM |

^ that website got more hits today than it's had ever, heh
I'll bet it'll be back, just through a "normal" carrier like Cingular. Instead of making it's own service, it'll be like a $10/month option or something on any Cingular/Spring/whatever phone.
Kinda like text message packages, internet packages, etc. 9/28/2006 10:16:45 PM |
