actually during Rivers' years, UMD was on at least an equal footing talent wise with State. in 2001 they won the ACC. did you even see the years in which they just dismantled Tennessee in the Peach Bowl, and West Virginia in the Gator Bowl? i would not have called the Twerps underdogs during those years. i'd call them at least equally matched, perhaps better in some of those years.7/18/2006 12:49:21 PM |

Maryland has had some good teams in the past. In the 80's and 90's. I remember when they were a top team after UVA was nationally ranked in top 5 in the late 80's or perhaps it was the same year Georgia Tech was a co-champ. Maryland beat ruined UVA's hopes of national title that year.
Maryland also halted Miami's hopes to win a 2nd national title. Greatest comeback in college football history...
Quote : | " Maryland quarterback Frank Reich engineered the greatest comeback in NCAA Division I-A history by leading the Terrapins to a 42-40 victory over the Miami Hurricanes. Years later, Reich led the Buffalo Bills to the greatest comeback in the NFL Playoffs against the Houston Oilers.
Miami bolted to a 31-0 lead at intermission behind the play of quarterback Bernie Kosar, who passed for 240 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.
To initiate the scoring for Maryland, Reich threw a 39-yard touchdown pass then, cut the deficit to 31-14 with a one-yard touchdown run. After scoring 21 points in the third quarter and adding a score early in the fourth, the Terrapins found themselves trailing 34-28.
That was until Reich connected with Greg Hill for a 68-yard score to give Maryland the lead. Miami continued to falter as it fumbled the ensuing kick return, allowing the Terrapins to get the ball deep in Hurricane territory. Maryland took advantage, scoring a touchdown to cap a 42-3 run." |
They had Bobby Ross as a coach for a few years and won three ACC titles in a row in the 80's. They were also contenders for the national title. They won a national championship long time ago too.
Maryland has a lot of football tradition and was never a perreniel doormat. They had a few shitty seasons under two coaches in the mid-late 90's.
But of course!
