i picked up a mossberg 500 for ~$250 a few years back after our house was broken into

its compact enough for home defense, but the pistol grip and lack of a shoulder stock will make it pretty useless with skeet (skeet skeet)

For most people the lack of a stock makes a shotgun pretty useless for home defense too.
Try hitting a man size target at 10 feet as fast as you can shooting from the hip. 3-gun shooters use stocked shotguns for that reason. Police have them for breeching.

gtfo with that shit... Pistol gripped is by far easier at close range and for self defense.

You obviously have no clue what you are talking about! If you want a home defense shotgun get something pistol gripped so it is small, easy to hide, and quick to the hip- as far as being acurate.... GET BUCKSHOT DUMBASS- you aim within 3 ft of your target and it's overwith before it starts.

I've got a modified Winchester Defender that i won't sell for a penny less than $300.... Pistol gripped with top folding stock, speed loader, heat grill, muzzle mount, high optic flashlight mounted, and forend grip ass well. Holds 8 shots and 6 on the loader. PM for pics or look for my old Shotgon thread

^Seriously though, what makes you think you have to get within 3 feet of your target?
You've probably never used a shotgun if that's what you think. At 5 yards most buckshot out of an improved cylinder (most home defense/police shotguns) spreads an average of only 3 inches at 5 yards. That's 15 feet, or about as far as you'd be shooting inside a room of any house.
If a pistol grip is so great, why aren't they standard issue for police cruisers?
Why do you never see competitive shooters with pistol grips?
Why don't quail hunters use pistol grips for their "quick to the hip" qualities?

Take you tacticool Defener out and actually try to shoot something. You'll soon realize pistol grips are worthless.

hahaha- first of all the "3ft" statement was an overexagerated joking statement. as to why qual hunters and target shooters don't use them- because pistol gripping isn't accurate.... P.S. a person walking down your hallway is a much larger target than fuckin quail or target.... ie you need to be much more accurate. Go google self defense shotgun- or tactical shotgun and let me know how many have original stock. also, would i recomend just PG no i would have a top or side folding stock as well.

get off it- I hunt ass well, I "shoot" shotguns and rifles the same in the real world asside from a self defense gun.... You want to say that a long barrel is better than 20" for your house too?

If you can't unload a pistol grip equiped shotgun into a target 10 feet away you probably have severe parkinsons syndrome.

Those guns are perfect for home defense specifically because of their compact size and the fact that you will most likely be shooting at a target less than 12 feet away. Its a trade off that gives an advantage in home defense.

I'd much rather have a pump action or automatic shotgun as primary home defense...with a barrel between 18 and 20 inches (or 18.5 so there is no question of its legality).

Seriously, a Winchester 1300 Defender is a great gun for the purpose, as it already has the extended mag. But I think I would stick with the stock over pistol grips. I personally think that the only real advantage pistol grips have is ultimate portability...something that is NOT a concern if you keep your gun under the bed. Grips are actually unwieldy if you do need to shoot from the hip; a stock provides a more natural grip and doesn't load the wrist adversely.

Oh...and as far as using anything else as primary home defense...a rifle is just plain stupid, and you're probably better off throwing a pistol at your intended target in the heat of the moment. They're purely secondary defense and should be treated as such.

I've fired both, and shot a stocked gun at the hip and on the shoulder. I'd rather have a stock personally.

Really? I would have expected the stocked gun to load the wrist adversely when shooting from the hip, especially if using any kind of heavy round.

i've shot both from the hip, but my wrist felt better with the pistol grip

i was able to line up my forearm behind the gun and also to brace it against my side to some degree. i'm no expert with tactical firearms by any means, thats just my personal experience so theres always a good chance that i have no idea what the hell i am talking about

hey bud... if you want to get an "all purpose" shotgun, its kinda hard to do. home defense length barrels are not really suited for skeet/fowl and skeet/fowl length barrels are not great for home defense.

In my opinion, zxappeal is the only non-idiot in this thread. He made the point (without stating it directly) that a home defense gun is one you should be completely comfortable with. As far as pistol or rifle grip, either one will get the job done if you know how to use it and more importantly are comfortable with it.

If you are going to get a shotgun that you want to use for both skeet/fowl and home defense. I would recomend a remington 870, mossberg 500 is basically the same, but I'm not a mossberg fan.

both are pump action shotguns that cost about 220 new in box. for both of them you can buy any aftermarket accessories you want. In this case, different length barrels should be your main concern. If you buy a brand new remington 870 for around 220 with a 26 inch barrel (a good compromise for skeet and fowl) you can buy a 20 inch barrel for home defense for about 90 dollars. and its very simple to change out the barrel.

and PS. unless your thinking about going for goose or turkey, a 20 guage is fine for both your intended applications.

ok so back to the point of this thread, who wants to sell me a shotgun, after reading all this i would say primarly this would be for home defense, so thinking a pump would be prefered. Again let me know what yall have

^^pretty sure he made it clear that he wanted this gun primarilly for "Home Defense"... Why spend $220 on a gun only to spend $90 more for a short barrel and atleast $20 for a shitty uncomfortably pistol grip totalling at $330? When he vould get Winchester 1300 which is a much more versatile gun that already has an extended mag with a 20" barrel for about $150 used... That makes no sense- The defender is an NYPD issued shotty with cheap accesories.

Mossberg's are overpriced and heavy- remingtons are a decent shotgun but relatively pricey and not as smooth/quick of a pump cycle.

GO WINCHESTER!!! I promise it is the smartest choice. Google gun forums and see what others "who know something" have to say.

Remington 870s weigh more than Mossberg 500s (7.0 vs 7.7 lbs) and cost more too ($200 Vs $240).

If you ask gun forums you'll get about 70% recommending Remington 870, 25% Mossberg 500/590, and 5% Winchester 1300.
Either of those three would work great.

pimpmaster69, just go to Walmart and get a Mossberg Maverick 88. Its similar to a Mossberg 500 but costs like $150. Its a decent pump.

Save your money, pistol grips give you no control. Get a used short barrel if you want manuverability, or save yourself some money and get a hacksaw and mill file and cut the barrel yourself. Yes, that is legal as long as the barrel is >18" with overall gun length >26".

I've got a 20 gauge pump Mossberg, and I can knock as many birds outta the air as anyone else...and ive never, ever had any problems with it. From personal experience Mossbergs are not crap. But if your going for "lightweight" i dont think anything can beat a "Frenchie" they are ultralight. Keep in mind tho, the lighter the shotgun, the worse the kick.

I will rephrase my previous statement just for the greater good....Not ALL Mosbergs are junk! I personally do not like them and I know many others who feal the same way.

They tend to rust very easily, shoot off target often, and the pump as tey get older seems to stick and not glide nearly as smooth as other guns.

Mossberg has the "name" which is why they are so popular/ expensive... I have owned a variety of shotguns and after purchasing my Winchester I will never buy another.Anyone who says otherwise has probaby never shot/owned one before.

tell ya what- I may not know the actual metalic composition of sed shotguns but i can tell u this. Leave a mossberg in the rain for a half hour, forget to dry it off "thoroughly: and it will have rust spots. If ya don't get it quick enough they will be pitted.... been there done that

And just in case u have anymore amazingly witty/intelligent input for us here are a couple links about Mossbergs and their rusting issues with quotes from within.....There are plenty more but I have not the time to copy and paste.

moral of story is asshole- They do rust so quit trying to be so damn uber-knowledgable.... If they didn't rust then how come Mossbergs website for the new 500 has advertised a new "rust resistant finish" to better prevent problems from damp storage?

Anyway, firing a 26" cylinder-bore 12ga, we got about a foot of spread with 00 buck at 10 yards. It'll be a bit wider out of an 18", but not by much.

If you're OK with something no-frills, a Maverick 88 would be great. My roommate has one, and it's like a forkā€”pick it up and it works.

Here's one, about $200 shipped, plus transfer.

Shop around at Gunbroker. All sorts of shotguns up for sale, and one of us can probably help you out with figuring out FFL transfers and all that shit. OR, just go to a shop (I highly recommend PDHSC) and ask them about ordering one for you.
