I just got home from a two week stay and apparently while I was away, there was a power surge and now my internet does not work. My roommate has the modem and the router in her room and is running her cable through the router and she can connect. We have cycled the modem and router, unplugged and replugged cords and tried different ones but nothing will revive the internet in my room.

Whenever I try to repair the connection it fails because my IP address can not be renewed. I also have my router registered on the internet so I can access a webpage and DCP Release and Renew(even when the internet is down I can still access this site usually) but even that page won't come up.

help.

[Edited on July 23, 2006 at 3:11 PM. Reason : I know what a nework card is. I don't think that is the issue.]

that's like saying your tv won't turn on b/c it's fried and you don't want to buy a new one - you just want it to turn on - so you sit and stare at a blank screen

go back to chit chat

Then explain to me what I need to do.

I obviously don't know that much about what's going on with my computer, hence why I'm using techtalk.

if you are using your motherboard's onboard lan - then borrow a card from someone or buy one - insert into an open pci slot - turn on pc - install drivers - see if you can get online

if you already using a pci card - i'd recommend reseating it in another slot first (although this is unlikely b/c it sounds like windows recognizes the card)

if you can't understand this call up a friend that knows what he/she's doing to get help

thank you.

But let me ask you this....I just tried to connect with my laptop. Whenever I plug the cable into my laptop, it also says a network cable is unplugged. The internet was working fine on my laptop at the hotel yesterday. It seems like it is a router problem to me.

And now it works.......

Seems like port 1 on the router is bad...if that's possible

so your roomate has the modem and a router in her room
then there's a cable running to your room and you have a router too?

if you have a second router, then take it out of the equation and plug your computer into the first router.

if that doesn't work, bypass all routers and try plugging your computer directly to the cable modem. if that works then you've got problems with a router. if that doesn't work then the problem is your network card because you've already said the router is working since your roomate can get on the internet.

See, port one was working for my roommate, so I assumed it would work for mine...so we switched the cords and port one didn't work for me so I just tried ports three and four and they work fine.
