Out of all my email accounts, webmail is the only one that gives me spam. I've gotten so many phishing emails from ebay and paypal fakers, not to mention these damn Chase bank emails who keep wanting my debit card number. I thought NC State was anal about security. I would trade webmail for another email address like on yahoo or something, but would that do any good? Would all that crap just forward to that new email? 7/30/2006 9:00:28 PM |

Setup your server side filters to have a rediculously low Spam level tolerance. 7/30/2006 9:25:13 PM |

Pure Message eh? From what I read, it's useless as far as spam is concerned. 7/30/2006 9:27:54 PM |

What did you read that gave you that impression?
why don't you just try it and see if it makes a difference. It takes a few minutes to set up. It works fine for me. I get like 2 spam emails in my spam folder (none in my inbox) every few days. I've never gotten any of the emails you guys are talking about. Set up the spam level filter to delete everything over a certain percentage (high, you don't want to delete good emails) then set up another level filter at a much lower percentage and have all of that put into a Spam folder. Check the spam folder every few days and make sure there's no good email in it. You then have the choice of either just deleting what's in the folder or first reporting it and then deleting it.

I got about 20 legit emails a day as a student, and 10 spam emails. I NEVER had issues with webmail since I took the 15 minutes to set it up properly. Outlook is even easier than Webmail to setup with the filters.

Properly handling email spam is only a small part of the security process. If you can find a way to allocate additional time/money/resources to fix this problem, please suggest them to the university, I'm sure they would appreciate them. Otherwise, use the resources/guides they already provide you.7/31/2006 6:23:06 AM |

I know exactly what you mean about spam, and I never give my email to potential spammers.
My solution? GMail
I started a gmail account and set up a filter on my Webmail that forwards everything to my Gmail account, which sorts out the spam for me. I can still use my old mail without dealing with the spam.

strips out 95%+ of the spam
but more importantly, will never delete a valid message (in my 2 yr experience with the product) 8/1/2006 1:00:35 AM |
