Damnit. I wish there would have been a thread like this before Monday. I had an important phone interview & assumed because I'm great at in-person interviews, it would be a breeze.

I think not.

My one tip of advice, SPEAK CLEARLY. Like we all know, it's difficult to convey what you're trying to say through the phone w/out facial expressions, etc.

Maybe some specific instances that you have already done this stuff and done well at it.

Good good.

I am already a part of this company but this position would move me from Raleigh to Atlanta and I'd be full-time instead of part-time.

I have my resume in front of me and the job description with highlights on what I want to cover.

Phone interview questions:

Tell me about a time you had to work in groups.

Tell me about a time you had a conflict with other group members......How did you handle this situation?

What do you think makes you a good choice for this position?

Tell me about a time you had to meet a deadline?......what did you do to ensure that you met this deadline?

When working in groups, do you prefer to be a leader, or follow directions.

Tell me about a time you had to interact with an angry customer...........How do you think you handled this situation?

How do you effectively manage a workload?

ect.....................

in my experiences with phone interviews, they are just there to weed out the dumbasses with similar resumes to competent people. Usually it's a recruiter just trying to narrow the field down for the hiring manager. Just tell them what they want to hear, and you'll make it to the next cut.

I'm conducting a phone interview today, and I've been interviewing a lot of people over the last several weeks.

From my end, some tips I'd have

Like jimb0 said, speak CLEARLY, project confidence. Also, eliminate any background noise. If you're calling from a cell phone, make sure you are somewhere that has a strong signal. Don't be at a computer either, we can hear you typing.

Other than that, the same things apply to a phone interview as a live interview for the most part.

I know I am one of the few people they are looking at for this position because the previous person was fired this past weekend...my resume was fwded yesterday and they are calling me today so I doubt it is much of a weeding out. Thanks for the questions! Those will be helpful to answer and use.

Ha, I remember my frist phone interview. I had applied at this place like a month or two before hand so I basically gave up on hearing from them. One morning I had just woke up (around 10ish) was eating a bowl of cereal and watching some movie on tv. The phone rang and the lady asked if I was still interested and if I had a quick minute for her to get my info together. I continued to eat my cereal and watch tv while she was talking to me. I didn't realize I was in an interview until she asked something like, "What do you think makes you a good choice for this position?" My butthole puckered, I sat up slowly, put down my cereal, muted the tv and tried to respond the best I could. Yeah, I never heard from them again.

This is late, but I'll offer it for reference: If you're able, stand during the phone interview; it'll make you sound more alert. Be sure not to move around too much, though; it's noisy and you could become too wound up.

And as has been previously posted, enthusiastically present your education, experience, and training in a manner that fits the job description as closely as possible; convince the hiring official that YOU are THE person for the job. Good luck to you in your endeavors.

She was in meetings all day so we played phone tag a bit and then we agreed on tomorrow around 11 am since they are an hour behind us and I have to work tonight until 2 am (for their company...it was very nice that she asked if I had to work and all so she didn't call too early). My general manager, who is one step above my boss, is going to try to find his copy of the phone interview sheet to forward me and I have another friend who is in the position I am going for to help me get the lowdown on the interviewing and he is applying for the position of my boss. Seems like I made a few good connections.

My phone interview took approximately 30 minutes and went well. I stood like suggested and it was helpful. The HR girl said she was sending my name on to my Region Manager and the GM of Baltimore and Atlanta since there are two positions avaliable. I will hear back mid-week if not before. Thanks for the tips.

So I decided to wait on the Atlanta and Baltimore positions and I'm so glad I did. My boss resigned on Monday and now the same position I interviewed for earlier is open, but here in Raleigh, where I'd like to stay for a bit longer.

Now, when my boss told us all he resigned on Sunday night, I decided to be patient and contact my GM, who is one step above my current boss, later in the day. I didn't even have time because I woke up to a text message from him asking if I had heard the news...I said yeah and asked what he was going to do...and he said that he would find a new TM and I told him that he had my resume and my interest.

About two hours later, corperate calls me and says that since I've already done the phone interview, I don't need to do another one and that my GM should be calling me to set up an interview.

That was two days ago and still nothing. Should I be patient? How long do I wait before calling to inquire about the position?

I guess I should note that I spent 4 weeks at training with my GM and we became friends...we went out to the bars together and travelled together so I know how he is as a person. He doesn't seem to like to be pestered.

Whining to ensue:

No, you don't understand. I spent half my summer at training........I worked helping get bars signed, which isn't my job description.......I went above and beyond to prove that I'm the right person for the job. I have a four year degree in building relationships and I'm the team lead...

She is a BA who has been there a little bit longer.

IT SUCKS.

/thread.

This is why you don't go "above and beyond" unless the people that matter will know it's YOU who did it. Otherwise it's going to get your superiors praise and leave you working longer and harder.

Honestly, Its comments like this that make me really worried about the work force in the next couple of decades. I can't count how many times on this board I've seen people say they'll never work any overtime blah blah blah.

Sometimes you just have to put in a little extra effort. Sometimes it doesn't pay off, and sometimes it does. But if you are the lazy slack ass bitch that does the min. all the time, then well, you sure as hell won't get noticed.

I mean seriously, is that what you think?

I don't agree with this. My supervisor has a lot of input on where I stand with the company and he has sent me numerous job offers and called me with the "scoop" on people quitting/getting fired before it happens....

Now, the issue arose this time because he had to send in his two top picks and it just happened to be me and my friend...I didn't ever see her as a threat because she already has a fulltime job that she...."loved" so I just never assumed she would want to quit. She just called me...had no idea I was her competition. I congratulated her and the hung up and sobbed. It's going to be really hard working under her now.
