So I've got a lot on the Big Island. I was fine with just letting it sit there until I had some money to invest in it, but taxes just went up 400% this last year, So now im looking for creative ideas on how to use it to make just enough to pay the taxes (about 500 a year) without having to invest a lot of initial capital and preferable only having to make one visit. It's suitable for farming, with a small orchard of starfruit trees, but to turn a profit on that would be a lot of work. I'm thinking more a long the lines of campground or something like that.

What are your long term plans for the property? Were you planning on building a house on it someday, etc...

Even something like a campground will take money and effort on your part--probably more than $500.

if you don't have the $500 for taxes, you won't have the tens of thousands of dollars for improvements for wells and septic or infrastructure improvements, as well as engineering fees for site plans and government review. And campgrounds may not be a permitted use in the particular zoning district the lot is located.

Hawaii doesn't seem like a big camping place. You really can't get the weekend tourists like you do in the states.... and alot of people don't fly 3000 miles to camp. Might wanna study the market a little bit more before you devise a business plan.

your best bet is to work a little more for the $500 if it's that big of a deal to you

$500 for taxes is nothing really, if you can't afford it, how the hell are you supposed to develop it?

i say sell it since you arent wise enough to figure these things out

$500 a year isn't much at all for a nice piece of land on a tropical island

you could build a decent house there and rent it out

I heard of a scheme a while back of people selling single square feet to people just so they could say they owned property in Hawaii.

But you're not cool enough to pull that off.
