and shes really cute, and very loving, and well trained. she has had all her shots, has been spayed, etc etc.. shes crate and house trained... the story is she was given to the adoption agency because some guy was told by his landlord that he would have to move or get rid of his dogs... apparently it was a tough situation and he didn't have the finances to move.. but anyway.. the pawprints magazine said shes a staffordshire terrier... but Ive been noticing that she looks more and more like a pitbull the more I stare at her.

Anyone know about the true temperments of them? She is definitely a mix but it scares me knowing all the stories I've heard about pit bulls.. please help

considering staffordshire terriers look nearly the same as pitbulls, why are you surprised.

I guess you haven't heard about the bouts of uncontrollable rage that can occur due to prolonged eye contact.

pitt bulls are very protective. Just make sure she is very socialized and she'll be fine. Rottweillers can be mean as hell, but if you socialize them they are like my step moms 110rott. A big puppy.

the key to any good dog is socialization and training. pits/staffs (as well as many other breeds) can be protective of their owners, but they are by NO MEANS "bad" breeds.

with any dog, you should socialize it and get it into an obedience class. If you are already scared of the dog, then that is a problem. The dog will know you are scared and become the alpha of the pack and then you will have problems. i would suggest calling an obedience trainer and talk to them. try teamworks dog training

also, most people can't tell the difference between a pitt and a am staf. Pitts are great dogs if they are in the correct hands. They need strong minded leaders and a lot of socialization.

good luck!

The dogs are naturally protective and aggressive in its protection but so are many other breeds. What makes them "dangerous" is the combination of being over-protective/territorial and their insanely high strength. You should be just fine if the dog is well socialized and you get some training. High strength aggressive breeds are pretty much a must for professional training classes. These dogs only become a problem when people neglect training or they encourage negative habits (rough housing with your dog or teasing with aggression). Chows, rotties, staffordshires, and pit bulls are all ones that training is definitely something to consider.

Be aware that if she looks like she has pit bull in her, some landlords (particularly apt complexes) won't allow you to live in the residence with her. It just means you'll have to be extra devoted to her when it comes to looking for new places to live.

I've never had bad experiences with pit bull mixes. The rescue I'm with just adopted one out (they may have been staff mixes though), and she was sweet. I'm in the crowd that's telling you that the pit bull in her will possibly make her protective of you, but that if you socialize her well enough she'll be accepting of many people.

I have a pit bull mix and a lot of the neighbors are afraid of her. I guess I have had her around 7 years now and she is one of the sweetest dogs I know.

She is very protective of me, but has never bit anyone. She just barks. She gets along with kids and other pets. She has a lot of energy.

There was a story on the news about this woman who had a pitbull and she had raised it from when it was a puppy. They went 4 years w/o ANY problems, then all of a sudden one day the dog bit her fucking lips off. They had to do the dog Old Yeller style.

Packman I saw that on the news too and unfortunately they didn't discuss any type of dominance issues this dog had. Too me the dog was not being "an aggressive Pittbull" as so many people think, but it was being a dominant bitch. Unfortunately, pittbulls have very strong jaws so when they bite they actually cause damage. These news people tend to over look the cocker spaniel, dachshund, chihuahua, (etc) biting a face b/c they are smaller and don't do as much damage. I get so pissed off at these news stories b/c they make people scared of a breed and they don't explain any cirumstances. AND THEY NEVER BLAME THE OWNERS!!!

^^ not to mention the dumbest dogs alive. I fucking hate cocker spaniels, and their desire to pee anytime an event occurs, whether it's the doorbell, the microwave, or a TV show going to commercial.

Staffordshires are great dogs. They look pit bull-ish, but tend to have a temperament more consistent with a boxer. One of my neighbors has one, and she and my boxer are BFFs.

They are very high strung, so as long as you make sure she gets plenty of exercise, you'll be fine.

Oh yeah, Boxers. Those are even further from being a dangerous dog but because of the look people think they are. A black family (grandma with her grandchildren) in my wife's apartment complex (before we got married) got a boxer and they were evicted for having a "Dangerous Breed." They just came home one day and had a 30 day notice to leave taped to the door.

we had a pitbull in college that was the nicest dog I've ever had. We got him from the SPCA when he was ~9 months. he was starved and beat up with cuts all over his feet, so it was apparent his previous owners were training him to fight, or were just really abusive.

He was very skiddish for a while, and would continue to cower every time we picked up a broom or something, but once he got used to us he was very very gently and sweet.

^^ i remember him. he was sweet. its a shame y'all never found him.
Durden right

i have a lab/pitt mix and he's the biggest wuss, so sweet, and just wants to please us.
he was abused and neglected before i got him so he took time to trust people but he's the sweetest dog i've ever had now.

actually the 2nd picture of the dog - looks like she might have some shar pei in her. i have one and she's great too.

just read up on bully breeds - pittbull and staffordshire.
the fact that she's trained is a plus. but look into doing some obedience training with her yourself. it will strengthen your bond and you'll have a trainer helping you.

teamworks dog training is really good.

every breed of dog of combination could be aggressive. it depends on the animals environment, training, and many other factors. you just cant stereotype a breed because of stories.
theres been plenty of cocker spaniels and chihuhuahs that have attacked people. (our cocker spaniel wasn't trusted around strangers - she was very snippy and would attack strange men) but the news doesnt report on them because people would just laugh.

the most important thing is for you to be the alpha over her.

i have seen that video before and yet it still effects me. I don't know how anyone with a heart can fight dogs. I get emotionally bothered when my dominant bitch physically argues with another dog and no one gets hurt in those fights it is just all noise. I couldn't imagine seeing a dog killing another dog. I read a story last week about an ass hole in florida who had 100+ pitts seized from him and every single one of them had to be euthanized including puppies that were 8 weeks old and younger. In FL any dog that was used as a fighter and/or their offspring have to be euthanized. The dogs were starved to make them more aggressive and some of them were missing their noses, lips, and had scars all over their body. The puppies at 8 weeks old were trying to kill each other and had to be separated into different kennels b/c people who fight dogs breed the most aggressive dogs together therefore making more aggressive offspring. What made this situation worse is that the dogs were GREAT with humans.

I am not saying that pitts are supposed to be aggressive towards other dogs, just in this situation

if the cops ever used their dogs to bring you down, would you fuck up the dog as much as you possibly could (kicking it, gouging out its eyes) or just let it bite you?
