Quote : | "A nation of wimps: parents are going to ludicrous lengths to take the lumps and bumps and bumps out of life for their children. However well-intentioned, parental hyperconcern and microscrunity have the net effect of making kids more fragile. That may be why the young are breaking down in record numbers" |
Quote : | "Herein lies another possible pathway to depression.... Cognitive therapy owes its very effectiveness to the systematic application of critical thinking to emotional reactions. Further, it's in the setting of goals and progress in working toward them, however mundane they are, that positive feelings are generated. From such everyday activity, resistance to depression is born." |
Implication: coddled kids are less psychologically mature when it comes to resisting depression
Quote : | "Talk to a college president or administrator and you're almost certainly bound to hear tales of the parents who call at 2 a.m. to protest Branden's C in economics because it's going to damage his shot at grad school." |
That's fucking pathetic.

are you asking me what ad hominem means? because if you're saying my post is an example, then it's obvious you dont have a clue what it means.
what im saying is your article that you find to be so revealing of todays poor parenting, is just a piece of pop psychobabble because it has no peer review or reference citations.
it does not contain any scientific research, but is merely a string of meaningless anecdotal bits from a few select, partial observers.
in short, its meaningless subjective conjecture, and whatever conclusions the writer is trying to insinuate, are probably false and have no way of being verified. not that he's bold enough to posit any real conclusions, anyhow.
just like so much pop psychology out there today.

I'm a firm believer in natural selection, and yes, America is over protecting it's kids. That's why we have so many faggots, furries, and other such freaks of the food web (or wolf web) popping up these days, we don't try and kill off creative tendancies such as that, no in this world people like that won't be sent off to war, or other violent outcomes, but they won't be able to breed either

The fact that the article was in a pop psych magazine and not peer reviewed has no bearing on the validity of the arguments contained in the article. Attacking the source rather than the argument is ad hominem, fyi. Furthermore, the lack of citations or references does not affect the truthiness of the argument.
Quote : | "in short, its meaningless subjective conjecture, and whatever conclusions the writer is trying to insinuate, " |
Wait a second. Where has anyone interpreted it as anything other than subjective conjecture? If it's ok with you, I'm sure some people would like to share their opinions on the subjective conjectures presented in the piece.
Quote : | "are probably false and have no way of being verified." |
Fallacy: Just because an argument is not supported does not mean the conclusion of the argument is false.

from now on, nobody should be allowed to post scientific claims with citations from peer reviewed journals
if you gave 2 shits or knew at least a few things about your topic of interest, you should be able to produce such things.
i dont care about your opinions. post facts and then your opinions. without citations, the argument is flat. 8/9/2006 3:00:54 AM |

Quote : | " pop psych magazine and not peer reviewed has no bearing on the validity of the arguments contained in the article." |
are you serious? it's the only standard by which to judge scientific journal articles.
Quote : | "Attacking the source rather than the argument is ad hominem, fyi. " |
its not attacking the source to point out that it's inherently flawed. its not a credible argument. its a string of biased anecdotes.
Quote : | "Furthermore, the lack of citations or references does not affect the truthiness of the argument. " |
it affects the ability to /verify/ your "truthiness". without them, it cant be verified. it's just yet another batch of baseless assertations.
Quote : | "Just because an argument is not supported does not mean the conclusion of the argument is false" |
i said "probably". note your own highlighting.
now heres my own conjecture: if an author is making a true argument, the author tends to be inclined to back it up. if an author is just talking out his ass, then he tends to post his uncited, non-referreed opinions in "Psychology Today"8/9/2006 3:08:15 AM |

It's not a matter of trolling -- when it comes to sharing legitimate scholarly findings, you do it through peer-reviewed journals.

id say the influx in issues such as depression (or even ADD) has more to do with our hypocondriac society than it does with how we raise our children.

The point isn't whether or not the argument of the article is true, the point is that the article's statements cannot be verified. The article may very well have hit the nail on the head, but without an accompanying study or survey by somebody with the appropriate credentials in psychology, there's no way to know.

i do agree tree that kids are spoiled rotten moreso than they were before. that supports my hypocondriac theory where parents need something to blame and can get something to control their bratty kids. i dont think it increases the natural occurance of mental issues though. 8/9/2006 12:20:00 PM |
