im a freshmen, and i wanted to know of anyone here has studied abroad over the summer, and if so, what did you do to get any scholarships?

also, im applying to medical schools later on, and i dont know if they have any programs for pre-med students...... any help?

Im studyin abroad this semester. Its easy, go to the office sign up for a meeting, pick a place or 2. They'll tell you about scholarships and so fourth. Just go to the office.

I spent a summer in the design school's Prague, Czech Republic program. It was an awesome experience to say the least. But the one thing I regret is never doing a national student exchange. You can spend a semester pretty much anywhere else in the country and pay the same tuition. Its definitely a program worth checking out.

i did some research on the site, and it seems like an awsome opportunity. but, im worried about not having anything related to the medical profession as a program, but i guesse taht doesnt really matter cuz my real intention is just to experience the culture of another country.

and as far as scholarships, wat do you guys think is good to get one??? be apart of many clubs and a high gpa?

unless your in like honors, or scholars program you wont get more than 500 buxs
i didnt even bother applying to financial aid, cause the application was like 13 pages.
just save up some money and go, fuck scholarship

are you looking for a summer program or a full semester?

as far as summer programs i would go to either France, Italy or Spain

i dunno about you, but i study abroad to have fun, i will always remember

having crazy european sex, having crazy american sex on european soil, visiting 20 different museums and plaza's till you r sick of it, eating good food and drinking good wine, taking 9-course 3-hour lunches, heading to a nude beach for the weekend, or catching the train to amsterdam or a RyanAir flight to venice, skipping school on fridays, going bar-hopping around the city till 7am then catching the metro in the morning, pissing in a fountain in the plaza in the middle of town at 4am, Techno Clubs, Street music festivals, Afternoon espresso at the cafe, fuckin with people on the metro, watching sunrise under the eiffle tower, watching sunset on the Grand Canal, Red light district Hookers, but most of all Fucking my french tutor in the park.

^^^believe it or not, some people study abroad for a cultural experience. You aren't in chit-chat by the way, k thnx bye.

I guess i'll add that everyone doesn't have rich parents who will send their kids to Italy for a year so they can get drunk on a different continent.

i was asking about summer abroad....but i never thought to ask about actually going to school for a semster somewhere....anyone have any experience with this?

and also, is there really no luck getting scholarships?? 500$....isnt the whole thing like 5 grande?

i just went to japan this summer and it was a blast. i did some research and ended up finding a cheaper program than any of nc state's programs so i would suggest doing that. as for scholarships, i wasn't eligible for any because my program wasn't 3 months or longer and that's what most of the summer scholarships are for. good luck and definitely do it.

well then, if you are looking for an extreme cultural shock i recommand, going somewhere where almost nobody speaks english AND you dont speak the language.

Peru summer program is really cool, it includes at 10 day trip to the mountains to visit the ancient Inca ruins including the hidden city of 'Machu Picchu', Its a large program, in 2005 they had 60 NC state students going, i dunno about last summer, but its unquestionably the largest summer study abroad program.

India Program: i dunno much about it, but i have a friend that went in it and loved it. plus its the cheapest summer program out there, so you will save up so cash.

The was a program to China that takes you on the silk road in the chinese desert, and to Tibet and stuff. you also study 2 classes on Relgions of the silk road so you pritty much travelling all the time in buses/minivans/camels it looked like a very inspiring program, and i almost went on it in 2005, but i changed my mind the last minute.
Too bad however, i just looked at the study aborad site, and it seems like they canceled the program, they have a forestry program to china now


Anyways, hope this helps, whatever you choose you will have the time of your life, you can ask anybody that went on Study Abroad about thier best experiance in college, and they will unquestionably tell you it was Study abroad.

FYI Natural Resource students can study abroad in Europe this coming summer for free (pretty much). They also get a great price on the China program. Contact Dr. Gary Blank for more info on the Europe program and Dr. Ted Shear for China.

I will say that after spending a semester abroad, if you truly want to experience a country or culture, it helps tremendously to know a bit of the language. I'm not saying you have to be fluent, but if you can get by with some conversational skills, or recognize words in newspapers or on television, it will go a long way in helping you see what life in that country is like. You can see and read what kind of news is in the paper. You can see how advertisements and information is shown. You can get the gist of what people are talking about while riding the metro or sitting in a cafe. I think one can get a lot out of either route. If you've never been out of the country before, finding yourself in Hong Kong or Mumbai or Istanbul or Prague will be quite an experience. You'll have a lot of great stories to tell about your adventures. But if you want to go deeper into a culture or get a more substantial glimpse into how life might be to a citizen of that country, knowing the language is critical.

You'll have a great time regardless of where you go -- have fun and do as much as you can while you're there.

They are not $5000 for a summer. I studied abroad in Ireland this summer, it was something like $2100 plus airfare to get there.

While the study abroad office and the programs that they offer are a GREAT resource, you shouldnt limit yourself to just the programs and information that they offer. As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, there are tons of other schools and organizations out there that offer and even wider variety of programs and destinations. Just be sure to do your research so that you can find exactly what you want.

Since you seem dead set on pre-med, you may also want to look into working/interning abroad. There are countless medicine related organizations working in every country of the world that recruit interns or volunteers. In a lot of instances, you will go unpaid but much of the time you will have all of your expenses covered. Many of these groups work in out of the way countries that would provide you more of a cultural experience than even you may desire.

don't let them bull crap you into thinking there are scholarships and that everybody can afford it---'cause it's just not true. I was tops academically at NCSU but couldn't study abroad because i didnt have the moola and seeing as how i dont qualify for any financial assistance it aint happening...
