Both are 939 socket chips.
Is it just a matter of dropping it in, or should I expect to deal with support issues, since my mobo was made before dual-core chips came out?
Should I just bite the bullet and get a AM2 chip and mobo?

first step should be looking up the cpu compatibility chart for your motherboard.
whats the part/model #? 8/14/2006 12:09:31 AM |

if you're going to ask a question about your motherboard, make sure not to tell anyone what your motherboard is, because if they can't read minds what could they possibly know about computers? 8/14/2006 8:36:29 AM |

Here's a link from someone swapping a Merom (Core2Duo) mobile proc into an acer 5672: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread156778.html
I bought this same laptop back in february..the fact that you can upgrade the proc like this is a really nice bonus. The proc in here is way too much for my needs right now anyway, but if I can get a performance boost in a couple years (once prices go down) - then that's a benefit. 8/14/2006 10:01:46 AM |

I did this a week ago. As long as you BIOS supports the dual core CPU, just pop the new one in. Otherwise you may need to flash your BIOS to a newer version. 8/14/2006 12:25:15 PM |

Sorry I wasn't specific.
MSI K8N Neo4 w/A64 3000+
I'm especially weary about it because the board didn't initially support the 3000+ (Had to update the BIOS-- for some reason it was locked in cool n' quiet mode), which had been out for months before I bought them.
If it failed at supporting a contemporary chip, I'm almost wondering if I should avoid a headache and pass the whole thing on to my girlfriend so I can get a Core Duo 8/14/2006 10:22:09 PM |

which neo-4? click on the appropriate mobo link, the click the CPU Support link. Looks like all the neo-4s support the X2 dual core tho...but do make sure you have the latest bios update installed. 8/14/2006 11:52:00 PM |

I've got the K8N Neo4 and I know that it supports dual core. That's specifically the reason I bought it, honestly. You dirty tree-huggin hippie liberal douche! GOOOOOOOO ID! 8/15/2006 6:57:31 AM |

939 sockets evolved from Socket A's.
It was a natural process that occurred over millions of years. 8/15/2006 8:40:37 PM |
