So, Walmart hires a Civil Rights leader to bolster their image, and he promply drops this gem of a quote:

Quote :
"In the Sentinel interview, Young was asked about whether he was concerned Wal-Mart causes smaller, mom-and-pop stores to close.

"Well, I think they should; they ran the `mom and pop' stores out of my neighborhood," the paper quoted Young as saying. "But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores."
"

How'd that work out for ya Walmart?

But i'm sure that's not what Walmart had in mind for him to say when they hired him.

Probably not...but its a bad business decision hiring a racist and since IMO civil rights leaders are more likely to be racist than your average publicist...they should have gone with a publicist.

How did he think it would be publicly acceptable to say that?

If you check the voting record, the nations first minimum wage was passed for the purpose of stopping white jobs from migrating to black workers. It worked in spades and black unemployment doubled in the following years.

AHA, I can't believe he said this. What was he thinking?

But I have made jokes/comments somewhat similar before but not in the context of race/ethnicity:

"I swear to goodness, when people arrive in the US, they must be getting an orientation package with pamphlets about how to open a convenience store and rip off poor people."

[Edited on August 18, 2006 at 2:58 PM. Reason : I said it.]
