Any thoughts? I agree a tough stance needs to be taken toward radical islam esp when there actions effects the safety and livlihood of people in our society. However, i think its a little far-fetched to even compare our current situation to WW2. 8/30/2006 10:12:21 AM |

The degree of authoritarianism evidenced by a political body evidently is no longer a valid way of gauging its fascist tendencies... 8/30/2006 6:37:34 PM |

Comparing the Islamic fundamentalists with the Nazis gives waaaay too much credit to the Islamic fundamentalists.
They are nowhere in the same league. 8/30/2006 7:10:36 PM |

i thought it was absurd they compared Sadaam to Hitler. Last time i checked Sadaam wasn't rolling thru the Middle East when we decided to step in. We've done more invading then he has. Not saying Sadaam should have been in power, but the degree of stuff hitler did is a whole magnitude higher then the the actions of Saddam.
This is clearly Bush trying to use propaganda to aid his cause. 8/30/2006 7:26:44 PM |

For an interesting exposition on the topic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism
Quote : | "Fascism is a radical totalitarian political philosophy that combines elements of corporatism, authoritarianism, extreme nationalism, militarism, anti-anarchism, anti-communism and anti-liberalism." |
Let's see how the current American administration ranks on the criteria given:
1) Corporatism
I'd say Cheney's energy task force, and the vehemence with which the administration fought to keep its membership and conclusions as opaque as possible wraps this one up.
Conclusion: Check.
2) Authoritarianism
The NSA's blatant disregard for the rule of law in implementing a program in direct contravention of existing law, even as a means of circumventing legislative process, pretty much tells us what we need here. The recently closed prison at Abu Ghraib is another example of this phenomenon.
Conclusion: Check.
3) Extreme nationalism.
This one's unclear because nationalism, even statist nationalism, is used broadly. It's further muttled by our society's natural reaction to 9/11.
Conclusion: ______
4) Militarism.
The current administration is augmenting what was already a fairly consistent militarist policy in reaction not to a new threat, but to the fruition of an old one.
Conclusion: Check minus.
5) Anti-Anarchism.
It's not much of a surprise that an administration would prefer itself to anarchy, but the Bush administration has made this its raison d'ĂȘtre. What--aside from protecting us from terrorists--has this administration been up to for the last 6 years? There is a list, it's just rather short.
Conclusion: Check
6) Anti-Commnism
The right wing echo chamber has already annihilated the idea of communism in America, leaving little need for an overtly anti-communist stance by the administration. It seems particularly wary of China, but given their collusion with Russia, and looming status as a rival superpower, but that can hardly be tied to a particularly anti-communist bent.
Conclusion: ______
7) Anti-Liberalism.
On its face, this one seems obvious, but it depends on which form of liberalism the reaction is to. Most forms of ideological liberalism, even neo-liberalism, this administration has in spades. Obviously, what most of us think of as political liberalism, it sharply opposes.
Conclusion: ______
Verdict: This isnt a fascist regime, though it--like many administrations before it--has some fascist tendencies.8/30/2006 7:35:31 PM |

^ The debate is too often unfairly framed in that manner.
If asked, I bet most people support fighting against fascist regimes with aspirations of global dominance regardless of their ideological bent. Notice the stark lack of calls for a withdrawl from Afghanistan. 8/31/2006 10:27:55 AM |
