I'm trying to find a two bedroom apartment (or townhouse) away from campus for around $650/mo. or less for the rent. Mostly I'm looking to be away from campus because I've heard that the quality is better for the money farther away from campus. Does anyone have any recommendations? I honestly don't know where to start looking. 9/5/2006 11:07:03 AM |

I live at Wildwoods at Lake Johnson (off of Jones Franklin Rd) and it is pretty nice. I believe it is 750 a month. You might look at Sumter Square apartments off of Jones Fraklin. My gf looked there and they were decent for the money.
But even away from campus, you get what you pay for. 9/5/2006 5:06:46 PM |

Then stay away from the Crossroads area in Cary. Our one bedroom at The Park at Crossroads cost us that much. You don't even want to know what our two bedroom costs. 9/5/2006 5:16:32 PM |

i also lived at WildWoods for a while, and really liked it. not too expensive. I'd avoid "Dumpster Square." heard too many horror stories about that place.
if you're willing to look at things that are a little more expensive, i'd also recommend the Ashborough, on Dillard Dr. Friendly staff and really nice apartments. I lived in a 1BR there for 2 years, and it was spacious and had lots of windows. 9/5/2006 5:16:39 PM |

Ivy Commons. It's just down Avent Ferry past Varsity headed south.
Rent is $600/mo for 2br/2ba (each bedroom has its own bathroom) and the apartments are fairly nice. You either get a private brick-walled patio or porch with storage (depending on whether you're first, second, or third floor), and you get apartments that are pretty clean and reasonably well maintained. It comes with no benefits at all though (I mean stuff like a pool, gym, what have you), but you're a mile from campus and could walk or bus to whatever facilities you wanted to use.
The noise here isn't bad at all. There's rarely a party here because the management wants things kept quiet. Parking isn't bad, and there'll always be a spot within reasonable walking distance of your apartment.
You should check it out, get a walk-through on one of the apartments sometime. You can easily ride the avent ferry or frat court bus to school, or just walk (it's about 24 minutes to walk from here to harrelson factoring in lights and such).
Oh yeah, as far as safety goes, it's not bad there either. Now, if you leave nice shit sitting out in your car, or leave your car unlocked, there's a good chance it'll get broken into. But if you don't leave money sitting out in plain sight next to your iPod, you won't have any trouble. 9/5/2006 5:22:47 PM |

I live at Camden Manor Park on creedmoor (if you are coming from down town turn left after the mall and they are 1/2 mile on the right)- These are really nice and they have 1 pretty awesome gym, and 1 small gym, 2 pools, most of the apartments have never been lived in because the complex is new. The staff has been awesome; most of the people that live here are lower - mid twenties. (This is all assuming you have a roomate, if not - this place is rather expensive)...Let me know if here is where you decide! 9/5/2006 5:43:59 PM |

^I looked there and really liked them. But like you said, they are kinda expensive. I think it was $950 a month for a two bedroom, with basic cable included. Are all pretty much brand new. The gym has pretty much everything you need to work out. And they have a nice movie room with a data projector that you can use. 9/5/2006 7:36:42 PM |

very close to school, very good rent, and the apartments are newer, also you could buy your own unit and rent out the other rooms to people and pay for your own rent 9/5/2006 7:40:54 PM |

I lived there for a couple of years and it was nice. The directions and other info is all on the site.

I went to Sumter Square recently and looked at the apartments. They're nice, but not for the new prices they're charging. $715 for the two bedroom townhouse seemed steep to me, especially since I know they used to charge a lot less.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! And feel free to post some more.

Yeah they will open up each summer. This summer it was REALLY packed though. Like, you come home and find that the 6 spots that were always open aren't open any more... Taken up by new tenants.
Still, it's a solid place to live. I'd recommend it as a first try. 9/5/2006 10:14:35 PM |

right next door to camden manor...edwards mill apts. btw, that's not creedmoor after you turn off glenwood, it's edwards mill. i was happy there. they've been remodeled since i moved out though. they're townhouses w/ a patio and small yard.
i would consider sumter square still near campus. 9/5/2006 11:04:27 PM |

Avoid Cumberland Cove. The manager is a "pain". Our neighbors upstairs bitched if we farted, yet their rug rats were allowed to stomp on the floor and jump off the bed. The manager had an apt on the other side of my roomies wall and if he played his music slightly above normal she would come over and pound on our door..yet nobody but her and the assholes upstairs complained. I demanded to be let out of the lease and complained to her boss about her behavior.
