Old Dominion hired Dick Sheridan and George Welsh to serve as consultants for Old Dominion as they rebuild a new football team.

Quote :
"NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion has hired two veteran coaches, including one who built a successful program at Virginia, to serve as consultants as it builds toward a return to playing football in the 2009 season.

George Welsh, the former Navy and Virginia coach who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and former North Carolina State coach Dick Sheridan guided their teams to a combined 19 bowls in 35 years at the Division I-A level.

Welsh retired in 2001 in 24th place on the career victories list with a 189-131-4 record. Sheridan spent eight years at Division I-AA Furman, taking his team to the 1985 national title game, then led the Wolfpack to a 52-29-3 record and six bowls in seven seasons. Old Dominion has not fielded a team since 1940 but announced in late May that it was restoring football after considering it repeatedly in recent years. The Monarchs plan to compete in the Division I-AA Colonial Athletic Association.

Sheridan was a bad-ass coach.

My grandfather played at ODU before they dropped the program. Players picked up leftover trash at the stadium after home games and were in charge of groundskeeping. That was the OLD days.

That team should be in pretty good hands with those two.

UVA and NCSU were both better with those coaches than they are now.

^ How are you defining big game? If it's just FSU, then you're correct.

too bad Sheridan couldnt keep his hands off a cheerleader, thus he left due to "health" reasons.

Like what? Only FSU. Sheridan also had a "we'll play anyone, anytime" attitude. He did play App or Kent State here and there, but is schedule was still solid. The ACC was much better back then as well. He was a disciplinarian, much like Tom Reed (who wasn't a very good coach and left Sheridan with jack). Unfortunately, his bowl record was not too great- but his teams were consistently good. He would never have lost to Akron.

What?! No FSU, no Miami, no VT, no BC...

I don't buy that at all. You might say it was tougher top-to-bottom, but the top was nothing like what it is now.

And yet FSU is the only top 10 team...and they don't truly deserve it.

WINNING GAMES and winning seasons is what gets big recruits. Losing to Akron certainly does not.

Big recruit: "I want to go to NC State so I can play in glamour games like the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte."

Going to a bowl today is like holding a title belt in boxing. When everyone else has one, it doesn't mean as much.

Haha. Oh yes, the vaunted ACC was so great back then compared to now! So much so, look at all this resistance those original eight teams gave to Florida State in the 20th century.

1992 - 8-0
1993 - 8-0
1994 - 8-0
1995 - 7-1
1996 - 8-0
1997 - 8-0
1998 - 7-1
1999 - 8-0
2000 - 8-0

^ The strength of the original eight teams did not change much from Sheridan to O'Cain. I remember watching those games after FSU entered, it was like watching Texas taking on North Texas after people thought the year before that the ACC actually had quality football.

So when you do good against opposition that is all mediocre, it doesn't mean much.

Georgia Tech won a championship, Maryland was ranked in the top ten a few times, UVA was at one point ranked #1 in the country, Clemson was a powerhouse year to year. The ACC top to bottom was MUCH better back in the Sheridan years. No, the ACC didn't have a juggernaut until FSU joined in 1992, but it was a difficult conference. That doesn't mean the ACC won't get better now that Miami, BC, and VT are in the league.

And you should have noted that FSU was unbelievably bad-ass from 1992-2000 and pretty much beat the shit out of everyone they played, ACC or not.
