anyone know much about this dog? I'm looking at getting a dog in the next 1-3 months and this is one I like, yet the only breeder in the country I can find is in Texas, so that doesn't work.
Any help, thanks 9/13/2006 1:18:44 PM |

What makes you want this specific breed so much?
A dog with that kind of fur is going to hate NC. Stay away from breeds meant for cold climates... it just sucks for them. 9/13/2006 1:25:51 PM |

I was talking about the heat. If there's a breeder in texas, the heat probably isn't a problem. 9/13/2006 1:38:18 PM |

Just because a breeder does it does NOT mean its a good thing. Breeders like to think they know a lot more than they really do. Considering how prone dogs are to heatstroke in NC to begin with it just doesn't make sense to get a cold-climate dog with a thick coat. (Of course I know you are NY and doesn't apply in this situation, just speaking generally) 9/13/2006 2:44:06 PM |

you have that kind of money to throw around?
rare pure breds are $Texas
why not get a mutt? they're more loyal and have more personality (and you're saving a life) 9/13/2006 3:03:35 PM |

i've heard stories of mutts being smarter, and studies of them being healthier, but not more loyal.... and pure bred dogs end up in shelters too. i agree with getting a shelter dog, but it sounds like this person has made up their mind. 9/13/2006 3:59:50 PM |

spitz generally do not have the best personalities. that is just a overall view of the breed though. ADOPT A DOG. why do you feel you need to spend a bunch of money on a dog when another will be put to sleep. if you are interested in a small dog they are less common in shelters but you can stay up to date & find one. what kind of personality or things do you want to do with your dog? please do a lot of research on whether to buy or adopt and also whether to get a purebred or a mixed breed. if you get a purebred dog do not get one just based on looks. 9/13/2006 9:45:42 PM |

buy a dog you WANT from a breeder, not a mutt unless that's what you want. It's you $XXX spend it how you please. 9/13/2006 10:55:41 PM |

^^^don't worry I do plan on doing a lot of research before I get a dog.
^not as hot as you think. Sure there maybe a 3-5 day heat wave each year, but otherwise its mostly high 80s (oooh! )

Thats a very good point. And I've thought about it. However, I want to know what I'm getting and feel that getting a pure bred (or perhaps hybrid) is less of a crap shoot. I also want a puppy, and don't want to have to guess what the dog is gonna look like/how big it will be when its full grown.
I figure you guys can understand that. And yeah a Finnish Spitz is probably a pipe dream. How about a Shiba Inu?

The week I was there this summer felt a lot hotter than that. And I live in Hawaii where high 80's is practically a cold front.

http://www.petfinder.com type in zip code & breed here is a 4month finish spitz mix (or hybrid- whatever you want to call it.) hey maybe in a year spitz-american eskimo mix will be a designer breed? i think that is soooo silly that people are breeding mixes to make hybrids/designer. There is one reason that makes sense and that has to do with genetics- not as many health probs. http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=6946456 9/14/2006 10:04:01 AM |

Eh, going from NC summers to NYC summers I have to say NYC summers are a lot easier on you. But yes it was still over 100 4-5 times this year. And in the 90s probably 10 or so. 9/14/2006 12:55:34 PM |

My dad had a Finnish Spitz when he was little (his grandparents were from Finland), says it was a real cool dog, but kinda moody. 9/14/2006 1:34:02 PM |

i adopted an miniature american eskimo spitz off of petfinder about 5 months ago - i researched the breed as much as i could before i adopted one. i looked for several months until i found the one for me - and she was worth the wait. yeah, i think most spitz dogs usually have bad temperaments - but i was lucky. when i took her to the vet for the first time - the vet tech's went nuts over her, saying that she was the sweetest eskie they had ever seen. because of her thick coat - she has very low tolerance for heat so i take her on VERY short walks in the summer unless it's really early in the morning. so basically she stays indoors most of the time - which she seems very content with. and because she's so well behaved - i get to bring her to work with me every day. 9/14/2006 4:21:40 PM |

They are supposed to be free of major health problems and exceptionally long lived, overall. But one-person dogs.

does NYC have the humidity that NC does? that makes a huge difference from 100 degree weather in a dry climate versus 100 degree weather in a humid climate. 9/17/2006 3:49:35 AM |

Generally speaking, no NYC does not have the nasty humidity of NC. I'm leaning more towards a Shiba now though. 9/17/2006 11:27:01 PM |
