Hemlines. You'll be able to pad your paper with pictures and you can bring the history in to discuss social values/morals and how you think they effected fashion or vice versa.

Filmore (i'm pretty sure?!?!) was the last president that wasn't a democrat OR republican. How has the polarization of our political system influenced how our administration makes decisions?

During Filmore's Presidency the two party system still existed--it was just Whig and Democrat instead of Republican and Democrat. The Republican Party formed from the remains of the Whigs.

How about oil? The first US well was dug in 1859, so it covers the entire time between the Civil War and now. I'd recommend reading The Prize by Daniel Yergin to get you started.
