My sister is a Japanese teacher and wants help setting up a website. I have no problem building a site, but I've always had some place to put it (State's Unix account, work, etc). Now I'm trying to find a good place to put it.
You all know of any free web hosting that doesn't add lots of crap to the page? A simple naming scheme would be good, too. It'd be cool if it looked like we had our own domain or something. 9/14/2006 11:37:28 PM |

seriously.
here you'll get the generic, go with tqhosting or some other small mom-and-pop company that runs out of the friendly neighborhood ice cream truck response.

http://www.1and1.com/ has domains for $5.99/year
or you can get web hosting with a free domain registration for $2.24/month (~$27/year) 9/14/2006 11:44:19 PM |

yea, 1and1 isn't
but all the other people are like "omg this guy lives in raleigh, wow, that's the best thing evAr!!1" and then they recommend these retarded little companies. then they continue to make 15-page long threads titled "omg <insert-mom-and-pop company that runs out of the friendly neighborhood ice cream truck>hosting down!?"

Ok. I don't mind coughing up a couple dollars a year for a domain. On webhostingtalk (thanks dFshadow), I found I can get .info addresses for 2.49 from http://www.hostway.com/domain-name/index.html.
Finding a host looks like it'll cost a lot more. 1and1 (thanks quag) seems to have a pretty good domain+hosting deal from what I've seen so far. But $28 year after year still seems a bit much... Any more affordable suggestions? 9/15/2006 9:22:31 AM |

I've had an account with them for over 3 years and haven't had any problems. I don't have a high-traffic site by any means but they've always had great customer and technical support and I can only remember a couple of times when they went down and it was only for a very, very brief time.

if you can't afford $28/year, I don't know if you should be spending any money. 9/15/2006 10:21:40 AM |

how is $28/year too much?
how much do you spend on cable tv, internet, eating out, gasoline, clothing, etc every year. $28 is a drop in the bucket. esp for the service that 1and1 offers compared to many other big companies. 9/15/2006 12:47:11 PM |

It is since it's not even my website. But I'm willing to pay a little to do a decent job since I know my sister won't wanna pay with a teacher's salary and all.

If you read my comment, you'd notice I said 1and1 looked like a good deal. I might end up going with them anyways, but if possible I want something cheaper that's still decent.
FYI, my internet is free and I don't have cable or satellite. I fight with the old rabbit ears to save money. 9/15/2006 5:27:03 PM |
