there's not much to see. there should be a new Googley icon in your system tray that shows you the status of the 1-time indexing.
but when you go to google.com now, you should have a "desktop"' link above the search bar that will show your desktop search. And if you click Ctrl twice, you should get a little pop-up search bar. if you installed Desktop 4, you can use the sidebar with all the gadgets and stuff.

yeah i have used "lookout" made for outlook and google desktop

google desktop needs some work still but i use it
lookout is the product microsoft bought and presumably made their desktop search from - haven't used it because i've been pretty satisfied with google desktop

yeah, i do. and the desktop sidebar with google talk and winamp controls and i overlay my trillian on top of an empty scratchpad pane on the sidebar.

The only 'spyware' aspect of google toolbar is its auto-updater.
