I've used several electric shavers - the ones with the circular shaver heads and the ones with the straight mesh screens that apparently sheer the hair off with sideways moving blades under the screen. Anyway, they all suck. They take forever because you have to go over every part of your face like 10 times. And they burn my face and make it dry as hell. I used a relatively new Braun this morning with the self cleaning thing, and my face was frickin' bleeding!
The ironic thing is all the electric shaver commericals talk about how smooth they are and faster and easier then a razor, blah blah blah. But actually, using a nice sharp razor with good shaving cream feels like a hot knife through butter, and it doesn't feel like I rubbed my face with sandpaper afterwards.

so who uses these? do you like them? why?

i have a norelco one that squirts some gel-substance out. It works pretty well. Getting at the neck-beard is rough though.

^^^ yeah, i've seen that too. My father-in-law uses one - i don't know why. he has very thick beard hair, so i would think it would hurt.
i would think that older men would prefer "old fashioned" methods like regular razors.
i've always wanted to try a straight razor

I use an electric. Yeah, it does suck, but it's still somewhat less trouble than blades. Certainly less painful.

^ see, that's what I don't understand. If you use a sharp, relatively new razor and lather good, shaving shouldn't be painful. Especially if you do it in the shower or use hot water to soften up your skin first.

i got one for christmas a few years ago... and it works really well if my beard gets used to me using it every day. but if i skip more than one day shaving, i have to use a regular razor and start over with the electric the next day. something about an electric and shaving anything over a certain length. just doesnt work at all. ie: i'm gonna have to use my mach3 in the morning cause i skipped all weekend and the electric wont work

and to answer what i THINK youre getting at... i use the electric whenever possible because i am lazy. plus if im running late i can carry it in the car.

I've used both

electric usually gives me more irritation but is faster and seems to give me a closer shave most of the time...

People buy cheap electric razors, that is part of the problem. Once I got a good Norelco it worked much, much better.

I have an electric, but its because I have this fear of razors because I sliced my ear halfway off with a razor when I was a toddler

The really high-end Norelcos work really well.

I realize I'm not a guy- I bought one for my ex once, and it was a million times better than the former stubble.

I've always used an electric.
I always ended up cutting myself with a blade because I've got several
moles on my face (insert ugly comments here).
I envy the ritual of shaving with a blade.
and now because I'm 48, like sublime-ncsu said above, These things have gotten huge. Huge!

thats why old fucks use an electric.
between the moles, and their eyesight and shaky hands........

There is nothing better than a guy with a freshly shaved face that is all smooth and smells good, and doesn't scratch your face to hell and back when you go to kiss him. In my experience, guys only achieve that smoothness with a normal razor.

I can't ever see using an electric razor on my legs, perhaps it's different with the face.

Either stop using them, only use one when your skin is wet (like after a shower), or when your skin is good and oily (if you have oily skin, after you wake up), or just get some of that shaving lotion that they make for use with electric shavers (you probably could use regular lotion, but it's too thick and scented for facial use).

just get a mirror for your shower so you can shave accurately. it really saves time and is very smoooth. I had an electric razor when I was a freshman and I never thought it was anything special/better.

It's clearly not "better," but it's faster and easier.

I'm alright with a 5:00 shadow at 9:00am, though.

I tried using an electric for about a month, and every time I shaved my face irritated worse than before. it took me at least 15 minutes and I kept forgetting to recharge it.

I then bought a mach3 turbo and some gel. I've never cut myself, and thanks the gel, my face never feels like it's on fire after I shave. I swear its the best $10 i've ever spent in my life. I actually look foward to shaving now.

I don't understand the mach3 turbo. What the fuck does the vibrating do?

Electric shavers are never 'faster' for me. I normally have to go over my face 10 times to shave right. I can shave with a razor in about 3 minutes.

i have one of the norelcos with the gel stuff. i have no complaints. it sucked at first until my face got used to it, but ever since smooth sailing. i do use a mach 3 turbo (the one that vibrates) sometimes when i have to be really neat and clean (for interviews and such). the vibrating itself doesn't give you a closer shave, but it feels good on your face is all.

I use an electric because no matter how high-end I go with the razor, my neck will break out with ingrowns, itch like hell, and bleed half the time. I switched at one point to a blade, thinking that my face just needed to get used to it, but that never happened, and all I got for my trouble was irritation. Granted, when I used the blade, my cheeks and jaw were a closer shave, but I just couldn't deal with the itching/irriation on my neck.

i've tried the electric ones but yeah, they suck

so i use a trimmer ( http://www.remington-products.com/grooming/mb_mb-900.htm ) for most days. the shortest one for most of the face and neck, leaving a slight stubble, which i like. and one level up for the goatee.

when i want to get a clean shave, i use the trimmer to do the goatee just like before but i use a mach 3 turbo to clean-shave the neck and most of the face.

electric never worked for me, I use a saftey razor and badger brush with a great shave soap. My neck was always an issues with ingrowns and cuts...so Ihave been doing lazer hair removal on my neck.

i started out using electric shaver. i switched when i was 18 to a regualar blade b.c i found that when i used a straight blade i got a closer shave and had less breakouts.

might just have been a coincidence though that i was getting older and less prone to break outs anyway.

I use an electric razor currently and its not bad. The key is to shave your face while splashing hot water on it to open up your pours. If you try and do a dry shave, you'll get a rash of sorts on your skin.

However, in a couple of weeks I'm going to switch to shaving with a single blade razer. Closest shave possible and healthiest (provided you don't cut your neck).

I use both...
I shave my cheeks and neck with a mach 3 turbo and get my chin and upper lip with my Braun. Shaving my chin with the Braun is just plain faster and gives a nice shave. I shave my upper lip with the Braun because of bleeding--if I manage to cut myself shaving there with the mach 3 turbo it bleeds forever.

I tried to use one with the circular heads but that felt like it was chewing my face up so I switched back to the above-mentioned method.

Give yourself ~3 weeks if you go from a razor to an electric and it'll be a bit better--you've got to give your face some time to get used to it.

I use a Norelco. Not the closet shave in the world. But my hands don't work so well anymore. If I shave with a blade, you better have an IV and a pint of A negative handy, because I'll have 537 cuts.

Does anyone else not bother with shaving cream? I just use a blade and hot water right after I get out of the shower, works pretty well. I have an electric for cleaning up after those weekends where I go 3 days without shaving, though.
