I'm looking for a snake who needs a good home. I love reptiles, and have always had turtles around, as well as an iguana for awhile. I've always wanted a snake, because alot of my firends have them and I think they are awesome! A good friend of mine has a ball python, which I think is neat and very cute. I don't know what is the easiest to start out with, though. Maybe a king or corn snake? If anyone has any tips, or is looking for a new home for a snake, I'd appreciate the time. Thanks!

for good snakes I usually like to stick with something that i raise from a baby. thus you know it's history and temperment. you can pick up snakes from fellow tdubbers but chances are they are gettin rid of them bc they have been neglected.

i hooked beckers up with a well taken care of blood python though ill miss the lil guy.

corn snakes are to hyper. look into getting a cheap boa they are very intelligent, live forever, grow to a good size, and have an excellent temperment.

allboas.com if you wanna see some exp. ones.

dont get a snake and get tired of it and neglect it though. i hate when that shit happens.

never buy from a petstore they usually sell low quality/pattern snakes at cut throat prices.

go to the snake show that is held at the fair grounds yearly.

Look around...there's like 3 for sale on tdub right now. I think 2 or 3 boas and a python.

I have looked around TWW, one of the boas someone beat me to, and the python went to beckers. I don't have to money to spend $75, but I really do want one. What about king snakes, what are the thoughts on those? Most of the craigslist prices are too high for me, although one lady is selling 2 bp's for $25 each, but she doesn't want to split them, and I want to start with one. If anyone hears anything, please let me know. Also, I'm looking for a decent sized, affordable tank. I have one at my house, but I'm not there, so if I do find one, I'll need somewhere to put it... Thanks, ya'll!

^^ if you want a quality snake 75 dollars will get you bare minimum when it comes down to it. i got that lil bugger for actually 50 i think at the snake show. they usually sell for 95+ online let alone pet store prices. the only reason i got her for so cheap is that a "blood" python doesnt sound like a very friendly snake and they were not sellin because of this.. and that some are mean fuckers.

I would suggest a corn or kingsnake. Both of them can be very hyper and dont sit as calmly as a boa or python but from a feeding/housing standpoint, you'll spend much less housing a corn or king than you will a full grown boa or python. Not to mention pythons and boas require larger food which cost more money. In my opinion, a corn would be your best bet to start on. They're inexpensive, easy to care for and very rarely bite.

And where would you recommend getting one? I'm not much of a pet shop person...those sorts seem to be less expensive than constrictors, the kings and corns, I mean. I'd really like to find one that is already used to people and is eating and whatnot, because I'm told sometimes getting them to eat right at first is tough.

best thing i can say is find what u like as far as looks, then research it's size, feeding, temperment and all that other stuff. corns are good starter snakes but alot of ppl that have had snakes for a while will still keep corns. kingsnakes are also a good choice. the main thing is what do u want to do w/ it? watch it and only take it out some or have it out all the time, like said lobes said kings and corns can be hyper.

Cool, cool...I don't know about a hyper snake. I want to have it out, and I want to be able to play with it.

^getta boa you wont regret it.

about corns. they have shitty coloration, are dumb, and do bite. mine used to bite me/hiss and i handled it regularly.

they are dumb meaning mine would poop on me while i had it out. my boa and python have never done this.

the snakes i've had are..

first snake:
baby redtail boa bought at school (highschool) hid from mom, got found out gave to my teacher for free.
adult corn. dumb snake
baby arizona mountain king.. too high strung same with corn
picked up a harlequin boa from my teacher buddy for free, he started breedin' and owed me one.. i love boas.
python which ill be getting back tomorrow, decided it's a good lil guy lol
corn snake, bought

Well, I guess I can't beg you for it, but if you run out of room for the python, give me a holler...

Your odds of being bit are much greater with a boa or python than compared to a corn snake.

Boas and pythons are great snakes, dont get me wrong, but housing an adult is a big responsibility

i like ball pythons and blood ball pythons for good beginner snakes. good size. good temperments.

as far as looks i LOVE rainbow boas. but they dont have the greatest temperments (from the breeders i've talked too) but i want one someday. they are just incredible looking.

hognose snakes have wonderful temperments too. only problem is getting their food. they eat toads/frogs.

Boas and Ball Pythons do make for relaxed pets but as Lobes said they can get bigger than most people can handle (maybe not the Ball Pythons but def the boas). The vast majority of Cornsnakes are very relaxed as adults, that is what makes them perfect education animals and they are used in a variety of natural science settings worldwide. Having said that, I currently own a beautiful corn that bites more savagely than any other in my collection (and I have quite a few). Temperament can be assigned to a species but they are all individuals and some are naturally more aggressive than others. Lastly, as far as price is concerned try to find someone who has been in the herpetoculture hobby for a few years. They can give you the best info on animal pricing and oftentimes you can get them for a good price. The little Balls I have for sale are more expensive than the ones you would find at the local shows (probably 3-4 times as expensive) but mine are captive bred by me (instead of wild caught or captive born) and have the possibility to be heterozygous for a trait that is currently worth a bit of money to BP enthusiasts. The cost may be prohibitive to some but to others that are looking for a certain color/pattern morph or maybe interested in captive bred animals only it is worth the price. Long story short, you may want to reconsider a cornsnake as they are relatively inexpensive and usually calm down nicely as adults.

Haha...well, I just want a snake that is nice, that I can take out and play with, and that won't get ridiculously large. It doesn't have to be the prettiest thing in the world. Thanks for all your input guys...

Not to be mean, but if you cannot afford to actually pay for the animal...how are you going to afford to take it to the vet if it needs treatment for something?

^You just missed the reptile and exotic show...

Doesn't anyone realize that snakes do not belong in the house?

They are wild animals, not pets. That is why they do that thing called "bite". People get them for the novelty they represent, then realize they cannot conveniently accomodate them once they mature and grow.

Go to allboas.com. The breeder is really experienced, loves his snakes, and can guarantee you good stock. (He was my chem teacher...the Bonnie boa from 2003 is named after me )

the best place to pickup a good boa would be from the reptile show that's held several times a year at the fair grounds. the python would make a good first snake for you. i havent been over feeding so it's a nice compact size right now. im just not sure if i want to keep it or get another boa.

I tried to look up when the reptile show was at the fairgrounds...I think I saw a flier for it when school started back, but it had already happened. Does anyone know when the next one is?

And as for anyone wondering about me buying a snake, but not having the money for upkeep, I can assure you I care for my animals and certainly don't want them to be unhappy with me. I just don't have the cash to put down on pet store buys, or even the humane society, which as far as I've looked, are quite expensive. I would have thought the babies were less expensive, but maybe not. Regardless, however, I will take responsibilty for what I get. Thanks for the concern.
