ok so I have road runner and a linksys router. I am getting kicked off of AIM about every 10 minutes or so and it kicks me off and back on in 2 seconds. It usually happens really fast, but it is an incredible pain. If I am browsing the internet, it may freeze for a second but it is no big deal. I have been told there are some settings I can change relating to TCP and UDP ports. Anybody have any ideas about how I would go about fixing this problem?

1) If you are running any sort of FileSharing program, turn it off, as that's what's causing your to get kicked off.
2) If you want a (possible) fix, Google the ports for the various programs you use and open them up on your Linksys router and firewall.
3) If you want a real fix, tell TWC your connection sucks and have a technician come out to look at it. If you go this route, any technical information you can provide them (packet loss, ping time, etc.) would be helpful.

Does the behavior stay the same if you change this?

when I pulg in hardwire through my router, I am not getting disconnected at all (for at least 3 hours now). I would call road runner but I don't have time to sit around all day to wait for them to maybe show up during that timeframe (unless they can come on the weekends).

I do not have a filesharing program open.

If you plug in to the wired port on the router and you're not getting disconnected, it's not a roadrunner problem, but a wireless problem.

Do you have a 2.4Ghz phone? If so that may be the culprit. If you have neighbors who might also have wireless routers, chances are everyone's on the default channel and signal overlaps may be the cause.

Try

-changing the channel in your router's wireless settings
-updating the firmware in the router and/or wireless NIC drivers to eliminate any bugs or interop issues.

i had the same problem with aim going offline every now and then. i used to use AIM 5.9 but have switched to Triton. I don't think I'm having the same connection problems with Triton.

What version of AIM are you using?

make sure any powersaving features for the card are disabled.

also, if you have windows xp make sure the only stuff you have installed for the card is the drivers. Alot of the manager software that comes with these cards will just fux everything up. The windows xp wireless manager does a better job.

I live in an apartment complex and when I first set up my router, I changed the channel to another setting other than default. I do not have a 2.4Ghz phone (no landline), although it is possible my neighbors do.

I am using AIM 5.9 and I have internal wireless (windows XP), this is actually a newer system. Also, the router is only a year old and I have upgraded firmware since. I thought something was wrong with the router when I first got it since my neighbors don't appear to get kicked off 24/7, so I exchanged it for another one and still have the same problem. So yeah, this has been going on for a year, but got worse when I moved to a different building.

I have a Linksys WRK54G router AND when I use wireless in other places I do not get disconnected like this, so I definitely do think it may be my router.
