the other [main] topic died a while ago [there's another, but its polluted]

http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/18/threes-company-warner-patents-all-in-one-hybrid-disc/

All three (DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray) formats on one disk

I'm debating if it would only be good for movie companies, as it would allow those who support both formats to only print one disk, or if this somehow benifits consumers as well
possibly if a good majority of movie co. started using these, it would force the more expensive player out? if the disks will play on both types of players, and one is a hundred or so more, who would buy it? and how would dual format players handle it? probably default to one, but thats inferring that x is better than y
if a consumer-writable version were to come out, could it write both the HDDVD and Blu-ray seperatly? that would allow for a decent amount of storage

the tri-format disk would seem to still be an "if" in itself, as I think all Engadget is only going on a patent for its primary resource, but still interresting

HD DVD: $499 (player)
Blu-Ray: $999 (player; not counting the PS3 for $599-699)

oh and let me chime in for noen to save him the trouble.

This would be good for consumers and bad for sony.

And because anything that is good for consumers contradicts sony's core values as a company it becomes doubly bad for sony.

Which is honestly doubly good for consumers.

which makes it even worse for sony.

etc... etc...

Sony will try to stop it somehow, either through legal means if possible or by proprietizing the format to work only on their players for any content they produce.

all the way

Dual Format players have been shot down by Sony already. The only way to get a dual format player is to build your own by taking the drives from the players that are out now (I've seen a couple on AVSForum).
