it's your service/network connection. probably not much you can do with your current setup. Get roadrunner. 9/19/2006 9:46:28 PM |

torrents and downloads i guess
with bittorrent, all my combined downloads (or just one fast one) never add up to much more than 150 kb/s
and i just remember 150kb/s being the fastest ive seen for whatever reason
for example thats how fast i was downloading a new OS trial from microsoft.com
whereas at school i was getting like 2.5MB/s
what can i expect from roadrunner?

well, torrents and downloads is not a valid method for determining actual bandwidth. You're only going to download as fast as the slowest link between you and the host you're downloading from. Even if you have a 100Mb pipe, if the guy you're downloading from only has 128k up, then that's as fast as you can download it.
try checking your speed at http://www.dslreports.com 9/19/2006 9:55:43 PM |

i mean i know all that...i just figured it was more than a coincidence that its been happening like that for months
that and d/ls from major sites like microsoft
but ima check that link now
edit: oh i thought that was a link to test my bandwidth nevermind i found it
i checked two reviews and i can expect around 2-3 MB/s with RR?
does that seem right?

I've got some tips. First you can go to http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php and click on smarTest. This will test your download speed and will give you a detailed report. After that, you can use tcp optimzer found here: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php All you have to do is click optimal settings on the lower right hand corner and save it, then you'll probably have to restart you comp. Then go back and test your connection again at the above link and see the difference. 9/20/2006 12:49:09 AM |

Bellsouth has 3 mbit DSL for 37.95 (regular price, not a 6 month promotional price) and 6 mbit dsl for 46.95.
Those are cheaper than Road Runner's "regular" prices, but more expensive than their promotional prices. Standard road runner will be 44.95 after the promotional period (between 2-3 mbits) while turbo road runner (above 6 mbits) will be 54.90.9/20/2006 1:11:35 AM |

Keep in mind they're saying 3 megabit (not 3 megabytes/sec) which is ~400 kBps. As mentioned, there are faster bellsouth options and RR is faster as well. I actually get closer to 5 Mb with standard RR.

Yeah, I have standard RR and I get closer to 1.3
Road runner CAN be faster, but is generally more variable than DSL. The bandwidth you get for various DSL packages is usually much closer to what is advertised (for good or for bad.) 9/20/2006 1:30:35 AM |

I am on the Dorm connection and I tweaked my registry settings and increased the amount of available bandwidth. My downloads are insanely fast. Here are the results.
