Growing up I always had heard his first pro home run was in Fayetteville as a member of the Orioles minor league team. Then today I am reading torontosun.com and they are celebrating Babe's first pro home run in Toronto... Now the question is.. Who's get the legit right to say where he hit his first home run??
Toronto Sun article http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2006/09/20/1867320-sun.html
Article about his first HR in Fayetteville. http://www.ceciliatan.com/Entry131.html
It seems as though his HR in Fayetteville was in an intra-squad game and his HR in Toronto was in an actual game... 9/20/2006 12:54:55 PM |

the real question is: why are you reading the toronto sun? They're Candians for Christ's sake. 9/20/2006 12:56:02 PM |

they claim Sept. 1914, while the Fayetteville plaque claims March 1914, so we win anyway 9/20/2006 1:09:57 PM |

^ yeah I saw that.. But does an intra-squad HR count before a regular season HR? I mean by definition he was getting paid so he was a pro and he did hit a HR.... But I would imagine if you looked up his minor league stats it'll only show regular season HRs so they'll use that in their defense...

or the ohio/north carolina debate over who can claim the wright bros and the first flight. wrights were born in ohio but took their first flight here. ohio says they are the birth place of flight, while we claim to be first in flight. 9/20/2006 3:20:41 PM |

You're missing the whole point.
1) Babe Ruth played in an intra-squad minor league game in March 1914 in Fayetteville NC and hit a HR Technically he was a pro and he did hit a HR.
2) Ruth played in a regular season minor league game in Toronto in Sept 1914 and hit a HR. If intra-squad games do not count then Toronto can claim it.
Which city has the legit claim to Ruth's first ever pro home run?
I'll even post 2 pics since it seems none of you have read either article.
Fayetteville Ruth marker
Toronto Ruth marker
Tom Stevens, Babe Ruth's grandson, reads a plaque dedicating Ruth's first, and only, minor league home run at Hanlan's Point on the Toronto Islands yesterday. The home run ball might be at the bottom of the water to this day. (Michael Peake, SUN) 9/20/2006 7:16:19 PM |
