http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/09/20/chavez.un/index.html

Quote :
"The U.N. was founded in an era of two superpowers, he said. "The Soviet Union collapsed. The United States empire is on the way down and it will be finished in the near future, for the good of all mankind."

He also said the U.S. government was the "first enemy" of its people.

"Their freedoms are restricted through the Patriot Act. They are sent to die in Iraq for no reason. The people of the United States are being deceived," he said.
"

Quote :
"Chavez told reporters he, too, would like to explore nuclear energy.

All countries should dispose of their nuclear bombs, he said, but he would like to tap the technology for energy purposes because Venezuela's oil reserves are nonrenewable and finite. He ended the news conference by saying, "I have a meeting with the axis of evil somewhere around here, so I have to go."
"

Quote :
"John Bolton, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, dismissed the speech, saying, "I think that [Chavez's] rhetoric today shows exactly what kind of man he is."

Bolton said: "We're not going to address that sort of comic-strip approach to international affairs.

"The real issue here is he knows he can exercise freedom of speech on that podium and, as I say, he could exercise it in Central Park, too. He's not giving the same freedom to the people of Venezuela."
"

Ok I know its a lot to read; my apologies for that. Thoughts on this man and his speech? He seems failry charismatic, but I'm not sure how much of it is heart-felt and how much is grand-standing. I believe in several respects he's right, but it's also something that seems like it should be taken with more than one grain of salt.

the part where he went on about bush being satan, the podium still smells like sulfur, and imitating prayer when mentioning bush was pretty blatant grand standing

"“Yesterday, the devil came here,” Mr. Chavez told the General Assembly, alluding to Mr. Bush’s speech to the assembly on Tuesday. “Right here. Right here. And it smells of sulfur still today, this table that I am now standing in front of.”

Then Mr. Chavez made the sign of the cross, brought his hands together as if in prayer and glanced toward the ceiling.

The moment may not become as famous as Nikita Khrushchev’s finger-wagging, shoe-thumping interruptions of the General Assembly in the cold-war era, but it still produced chuckles and some applause in the assembly hall.

[...]

“I think we could call a psychiatrist to analyze yesterday’s statement by the president of the United States,” Mr. Chavez went on.

[...]

“It smells of sulfur here, but God is with us, and I embrace you all,” he said. “May God bless us all. Good day to you.”"

I'd say 90% of it is grand-standing. I'm not exactly sure how we should react to his speech. I mean, he could have made those points without telling us that the podium still smelled of sulfur from when the Devil spoke the day before.

I think he's preying on the anti-American sentiment that seems to be going around, which is his prerogative.

Oh btw, did you see that President Bush got a lot of praise for his speech to the UN? I even heard some very un-Bushy Congressmen laud him for it.

I don't know how much good it will do, but we'll see.

NPR was saying that while the speech may have provided some popularity points on the global stage, it probably cost Chavez something that he was striving for: a seat on the UN Security Council. Before the speech, he apparently had the votes lined up to get him onto the Council, at very least as a counterbalance to the United States and its allies. However, because of this crazy speech (and blatant violation of diplomatic standards), a lot of his supporting votes have gone questionable, with nations asking whether they want to put in another crazy and not-so-diplomatic leader calling leaders "evil" on the council... (hmm... who does that remind you of?)

since you said, "i generally ignore political commentary that includes racial slurs"

if i want to use racial slurs its my business

if you want to ignore than ignore oh wait you responded to my message by saying you generall ignore racial slurs

which in turn makes you a dumb ass and a hypocrite

omg the irony

^That's what you should have said.

Calling Venezuela a "shitty country" and using racial slurs to describe its leader...
...makes you sound like an obnoxious, uneducated dumbass.

(And are you really scared of Chavez? Do you think he's a threat to the US right now?)

Do you even know what irony is? Oh let me guess, I'm a fag for asking about a literary device.

Generally means generally. Yours was such a blatant example of ignorance that I felt the need to reply. Now how does that make me a hypocrite?

he'll never get a chance to see what good he might do for venezuela, b/c his foreign policy will get him embargoed. i guess he didnt pay attention to the cold war. i wish he'd shut up about the us like he means something and concentrate on efforts in improving his own region. his enthusiasm is better utilized there.

while chavez by himself is very weak and not worth paying attention to, the fact that his stances do, in fact, have large support here in the us is worth noting and combatting.

noam chomsky is a traitorus hack.

Even if they would both be wrong, I'd bet $1,000,000 on Chomsky to win any debate on media bias with Rush.
