alright... do you agree with: "if there is no supreme being to lay down the moral law, each individual is free to do as he or she pleases."

i'd say read the first few chapters of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis - in the very beginning he goes over the idea of morality - don't be turned off by the title if you aren't religious

Seriously man, anybody who thinks about this shit for more than 15 seconds realizes the answer is no.

Obviously you haven't looked into the field of ethics ... at all.

There are plenty of moral theories, including objective moral theories, that are "stand-alone".

Why do you think morality requires a God? Because if you don't have hellfire hanging over your head, you'll go on a sinful binge?

the counter is that most of our laws are derived from Judeo-Christian religious teachings, so by virtue of being raised in our society, you've been taught those standards of right and wrong.

now, do I personally think you need to believe in God to know right from wrong? of course not.

Yeah and the funny part is, every useful Judeo-Christian law is common sense. Most of our dumb-shit laws are the "extra stuff".

Yeah...most stuff can be traced to hygienic concerns (often anachronisms), or can be replicated by straight utilitarianism.

Funny, that.

Depends on your flavor of utilitarianism I suppose -- too many forms of it have monstrous consequences. Then again, same for Judeo-Christian ethics.

my personal opinion

which doesn't mean shit to anyone else, and i realize that,

is yes, but only in the sense that it was a creation of God.

but whether or not one believes in God has absolutely nothing to do with their moral character. It's something I wish my fellow christians would think about before they judge nonbelievers as "amoral sinners" and whatnot

Religious people think everything is a creation of God, why would they think any different of morality?

Not correct, most of our laws are derived from Common Law, which was independent of religious beliefs.

contrary to common belief, the middle ages and such were not eras of rampant christian fundamentalism.

Okay so sinful shit and things that come about via free will aren't the creations of God directly -- but something like morality?

only about 1/3 right.

Common Law was derived from Roman Law, Papal Law, and municipal laws; but the inception thereof was largely a creation of two factions: The Church and the pagan Anglo Saxons of England. "Common Law" didn't even develop until post-Gregorian times, after Aquinas first started talking eternal, divine, natural, and human laws. Perhaps the most influential figure in the Common Law system was Blackstone, who was just as much a theologian as a law scholar. Soon after that was Coke, who too justified his basis for having laws by using God. Even today, only the US and Britain are the only two countries that use a common law system (and even Louisiana here doesn't use one).

You can disagree with religion all you want. But you can't deny the church's power in instituting the system of laws and ethics that we still use today. (notice i seperated the church, and religion)

The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history may be the hijacking of morality by religion.
