Good press, for once, about a visitor's thoughts of tailgating here.
http://www.bcheights.com/news/2006/09/25/Sports/Welcome.To.Nc.State-2305084.shtml
Quote : | "RALEIGH, N.C.-"If you can't go to Carolina, go to State."
That's the motto those crazy fans over at Duke in Durham, N.C. live by. And indeed, to the rest of the country, it would seem the same way as well.
And I must confess, despite being a longtime follower and fanatic of the ACC myself, I was hesitant to group the big three from the Triangle together.
There is of course Duke and North Carolina. And then there is North Carolina State, the seemingly proverbial third child of Tobacco Road.
That's why head basketball coach Herb Sendek left at the end of last season for Arizona State. Too much pressure to compete with the other two.
But ask any dedicated fan of the Wolfpack and they'll tell you different.
"I'll tell you, up until around the '80s, the two schools were us and UNC. That's how we feel down here. Duke didn't come into the picture until sometime in the mid-'80s when Coach K put them on the map," said one alumnus (Class of '85) before the game.
And perhaps he's right. Perhaps the school that dominates Raleigh with its 2,240 acre campus is just a book with a perceived bad cover.
After all, when The Sporting News ranked the top athletic departments in the land, NC State measured in with a more than impressive No. 9 ranking.
To add to that, NC State has had more alumni as head of the top 100 companies in North Carolina than any other university in the state. Yes, that means more than both Duke and UNC.
Carter-Finley Stadium, while no Doak Campbell (Florida State) or Clemson Memorial Stadium, certainly holds its own with 57,082 screaming red-and-white clad fans delivering, at times, deafening noise. Not to mention their traveling fan base, which is always more than respectable.
With brand new arenas, including the RBC Center (basketball) and Carter-Finley, athletes have access to state-of-the-art facilities rivaled by few other universities around the nation.
But what's most impressive is the way their fans conduct themselves. Simply put, I've never met more polite strangers in my entire life. I even got to dine at the Strutting Wolf Grill - and free of charge.
I just happened to be passing by a group of tailgaters when a lady asked me if I was hungry and looking for something to eat. It didn't even matter that I was from Boston College.
"We're just always happy to meet strangers," she said with a smile.
And I was happy to oblige. Actually, I was pulled-Barbecue-pork sandwich, noodle salad and snicker doodle cookies happy to oblige.
When I told her how impressed I was with everything, she seemed dumbfounded that tailgating could be done any other way.
It doesn't matter if the opponent is Appalachian State, Boston College, or Florida State. Tailgating is tailgating to our neighbors to the south. But what exactly is tailgating to the Wolfpack?
It means showing your school pride: wearing your white and red, grilling everything barbecue in front of your monstrous RV or tent, and - if you're legal - throwing back a cold beer or two, from four hours before the game until whenever you choose.
After all NC State has an in-and-out policy, allowing fans to come and go from the stadium as they please.
So if you're feeling rather thirsty around halftime or just want to "stay in a nice mood," don't hesitate to head back to the tailgate and grab a drink.
And if I could drink, I'd toast to this: NC State is no ugly duckling." |

great article, I'm proud of our fans. When VT brought so many people last year, we had their fans tailgate next to us. As much as I hate VT football and what they stand for, I must say their fans were cool and we let them hang with us. Of course we talked trash some and ALMOST backed it up in the game. oh well 9/26/2006 2:45:31 PM |

some of our fans are drunk idiots, but the vast majority are pretty friendly when it comes down to it.
Every last one of our fans will be rude to people who come to raleigh with an attitude (UMD...fuck the turtle) but for the most part thats not a problem. Its worse with students just becaues of the BAC. 9/26/2006 3:53:01 PM |

As much as I'm against the tailgating restrictions, this article in a way justifys them. There is no way this person would have had the same impression if he/she had walked through a student section that had been drinking since sunrise. This is the kind of press the administration is starving for. 9/26/2006 6:05:33 PM |

i went up there last year. the parking situation sucks if you're not a student or high dollar donating alumni of BC. i believe tailgating is restricted to 3 hours prior to the game. i think the police come through 30 mins prior to the game telling people to pack it up. some tailgate on the baseball field, and others tailgate in the parking deck connected to the stadium. some kind of body of water (lake/river) goes by near there. also no tailgating is allowed afterwards if it's not a noon game. the stadium is close to the Newton line, which from what i hear is mainly a bunch of old jewish people that hate BC. inside the stadium, the lower level seats are all aluminum bleachers. i mean not just the actual benches, the actual stands are too. the students stomp on the aluminum to create a kind of booming, thunder sound on 3rd downs. i don't know what the upper decks are made out of since i didn't go up there. the concourses are a little weird, with half of them underneath the lower level bleachers and some in-between the upper and lower levels. for the lower levels, the entrances come out at the bottom of the stands. there are two screens in the endzones. they're in-between the lower levels and the upper decks. also the upper decks in the endzones are pretty poorly lit. i could barely see the people up there. i guess BC likes it that way so that you can't see when those two decks are not filled up.9/26/2006 10:31:35 PM |

99% of the bad rap we get for bad fans happens to be because previously, student parking and visitor parking were together. This = disaster. And yes, UNC fans do offer the bait, but instead of just firing back with words, NC State fans do not hesititate to be the first to engage in fist fights. It's kind of like in football where the second person to react always gets the flag. If this BC guy had been a tarhole, he'd be lucky to make it out on both legs. I've seen 65 year old women of the opposing team get harassed from our "tough" fanbase. 9/26/2006 11:50:40 PM |
