I knew that it wasn't over quite yet and figured that Vesper was involved somehow. I didn't forsee the Mathis betrayal, though."

Mathis wasn't bad in the book, Vesper set bond up. Having read the book I assumed when Le Chiffre said Mathis betrayed him he was saying that to pin it on him instead of letting him know Vesper was a double agent. He knew all along, which is how Le Chiffre knew he could get Bond on his "tell" because Vesper told him Bond was on to it.

its the 4th page of a thread about a movie that came out 3 days ago...

From Russia with Love and Dr. No followed right along with the books and were enhanced by their respective films....Casino Royale wasn't--whether that's the producers' fault or time's fault

[Edited on November 20, 2006 at 7:49 AM. Reason : I'll even go so far as to say the Lazenby movie was overall better than this]

Save for the whole subplot having SPECTRE be the bad guy in the movie version of FRWL instead of the Soviets. (And, of course, the original ending of FRWL).

And the death of Dr. No in the book. Also, didn't Dr. No have like a massive octopus or something? (Read it in like 1996 or so).

But other than that, I agree.

From what I remember of the book--and it's been like 8 years since I read it, I think it was probably too short to make an effective movie out of just the book. They do capture a lot of elements from the book well. Besides, when was the last time one of these movies actually followed the events of one of the books closely--I dare say not since OHMSS. (Aside from some short stories adapted for some of the Roger Moore films and "The Living Daylights").

Did anyone mention how badass it was to get Chris Cornell to run the theme song?

I was sitting in my seat and was like "Oh my God, I think its Chris Cornell"
Damn I love his solo work.

you know how in the movie Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise goes psycho trying to think up all the things that really happened that he hadn't thought of before? And then how at the end of the movie we find out the girl was screwing him over...but before that nobody in their right mind had any inclination that that was going to happen?

that's how this movie shoulda been

I can bypass the whole Soviet/Russian switch due to the political correctness surrounding the times. And it would have been so badass if they kept that ending...but when's the last time you saw that in a movie ever?

The thing I like about Dr. No, the movie, is that it's more of a sci-fi B-movie in some ways than a "Bond" movie. Put the octopus in there and it's definitely a B-movie and there aren't 21 films today.

The minute they announced they were doing this movie the only thing that came to my mind was they better get the ending right. Granted they kept the same general direction of the betrayal--but having her be dead, then him finding out and not being able to do anything about it shows more about the character than him just getting pissed off and deciding to turn a new leaf. He didn't seem devastated enough and I don't think we, the audience, were as surprised as we could hav been.

Guess I'll just keep reading the books and watching Mission: Impossible.

i really liked this Bond movie, and I have never cared for James Bond movies. It's one of the best I've seen. I fell asleep during Die Another Day. oops! I now understand a lot more about the character of James Bond, which is helpful. I will probably watch more James Bond movies with the boyfriend now instead of begging him to change the channel.

i liked the part when he fell in love with the girl. Then she betrayed their country and him, but he still loved her when he went to save her. I feel like now he doesn't want to fall in love again and be hurt so he just sleeps with a bunch of women and never fully commits. I hated the fact he slept around and now i have a reason as to why he did.

I've seen evry bond movie. I've seen every one starting with thunderball in the theater.
(I'm that old) And they have gotten progressivly more stupid starting with golden gun (1974)
Anyone remember the little schoolgirls fighting off about 20 ninja bad guys?
Or what was the one where Q, who was like 80 years old swoops in to save bond in a hot air balloon?

Anyway, I thought this movie kicked ass. An excellent job of adapting a 54 year old book to modern day. excellent script and acting. The torture scene was especially well done.
This movie has saved the franchise IMHO

Saw it last night, I think this is a positive development in the Bond empire. I always thought Brosnan relied too much on the gadgets and "lucky breaks", this bond is more brute force and all in all, more human.

I do think this one was better than the last three, I don't think it's better than most of the Connery ones, though. It remains to be seen, but of the major Bonds I'm going to say

Connery > Moore > Craig > Brosnan > Dalton

Dude, Craig is a way better Bond then Moore.

In fact the reason people get such a hard on for moore is because he's been in quite a few and funny enough the only James Bond's they really keep showing over and over on TNT/TBS.

Craig was a rough around the edges Bond who started to become slightly more refined as the movie progressed. If they keep that refinement going then his Bond series will be damn fucking near Connery.

Having Dalton anywhere but near the end of the Bond charts is a fucking mistake and you know it.

The guy, sabotaged or not, was not a good Bond.

"Why do you think Roger Moore was in so many James Bond movies?"

They wanted Roger Moore to play Bond from the beginning

they couldn't because he was doing the Saint

and then they couldn't get Cary Grant b/c he just didn't want to

and then they found Connery and they were like that's the dude

then it got successful and Connery wanted more money

and they said screw you James Bond is bigger than Sean Connery

and then they got Lazenby

....

and then they paid Connery more than anyone had ever been paid to do a movie

and then they were like--hey, remember that Roger Moore guy we wanted 12 years ago--he's way older than Connery but who the fuck cares

and he kept getting older and older and the movies were getting dumber and dumber because he was older and older

and then they said--fine, lets redo this whole thing, it's the 80s, smoking's bad, girls are being bitches and don't like the womanizing thing we have going on, but hey--we still got Q and people LOVE gadgets

so they get good ol' boy Tim and make him the coolest Bond ever except he can't smoke or screw around

...

...

...

and then they're like--hey, remember when we tried to redo everything? lets do that again!

and so they got Pierce, but the Cold war was over and spying is pointless now but they were like--hey, lets make Bond the next action hero--but lets give him dumb plots, bring back the hot girls, ridiculous gadgets and cheesier lines than Sir Roger would have even dared to say

...

hey, i got the best idea ever--lets redo everything? but this time lets go back to the first book--take bond back to his roots--and let's MODERNIZE it! since we're paid by Sony now, lets use a shitload of Sony products and make sure everyone and their blind cousin can see SONY on the screen every 5 minutes. This will be the best bond movie ever b/c it's cool--no gadgets (except exploding keychain and heart defibulator and cell phones--wait, cell phones aren't gadgets because everyone has cell phones--well lets use them anyway and make sure they say SONY.

Finally saw it tonight, I'd say I like the direction the series is heading. All of the bonds of late were more turning into Rambos with high tech gadgets, straight action, retarded plot, hoooribly unrealistic. (I mean a fuckin invisible car? give me a break) Of course this was probably better because it was actually based on one of Ian Fleming's books, which most all of the good bond movies were. Hopefully they can bring bond back to being a spy again, and I think Craig is a decent choice, somehow reminds me of Connery, but of course there still is a lot more over the top action scenes in this one than in the old Connery films. But overall, very nice, and I really liked the rendition of the James Bond theme as the credits rolled, it was kinda like the twist the Mission Impossible theme got in MI:III. Classic, but slightly modernized.

Die Another Day was based on the novel Moonraker...just slightly modernized + an invisible car

I can see why you might say it has some basis in Moonraker, (with the background of the villian to a certain extent) but come on, that's a little bit of a stretch to say it's "slightly" modernized with the ice castle and the capture/torture/brainwashing, etc...

I know that was the first time it was heard it in the movie, and I know its the same basic bond theme, but there were slight differences in it from the original. This was clearly recorded new by whatever orchestra did the score for the movie, I just liked the clarity of the sound and the instrumentation, as well as slightly different touches from the standard by various instruments. Everything about it just sounded better than usual. The movie soundtrack credits David Arnold with all of the songs, so he is probably the composer or director of whatever orchestra did it. Hell it could have just been better mixing in the studio, or better equiptment, it just sounded like a perfect balance of deep powerful bass and crisp trebles.

Need a little clarification.

Need to know who the 2 guys that shocked that dude were employed by. And the guy Bond shoots at the end. Was everything done, done by him or his associates?

the guys that shocked Mathis were British intelligence

Mr. White (the guy at the end) was Le Chiffre's "business partner"

when Le Chiffre lost the game and couldn't pay back his debt from the foiled airplane attack that dude killed him.

Mr. White was in cahoots with Vesper, who was implanted as a mole at British intelligence so Mr. White and his organization (whatever that maybe) could pull strings on both sides.

Mr. White very well could have killed Le Chiffre and Bond but Vesper made a deal with him to spare Bond and she'd give him the winnings from the game.
