I hate it when analysts say this, and I seem to hear it all the time. Any time they talk about LT, they say something to the tune of "Not only is LT the best running back, but he is the best player at any position!"
How can you even compare them? Is Peyton Manning a better football player than Steve Hutchinson? Is Julius Peppers a better football player than Adam Vinatieri? Is T.O. a better football player than Ray Lewis?
You can only compare a player to another player of the same position.

you can't even do that, because players serve different functions to their position. It's like comparing Michael Vick to Peyton Manning, or a speed back to a power back. It's just dumb overall. 9/30/2006 1:17:16 PM |

You can say the same about every sport. It's all subjective. Is a 23 game winner more valuable then a 45 HR, 125 RBI guy in baseball? You can't say. It's part of what makes sports so interesting to talk about. 9/30/2006 1:19:46 PM |

you can say "You can only compare a player to another player of the same position" but the simple test is if you were making a brand new NFL team and you pick players one at a time who would you pick first that would be the best player in the NFL, in you opinion 9/30/2006 9:21:40 PM |

The problem is that there is nothing that an offensive lineman can do that proves he is better than LT, short of blocking the whole defense himself. Because someone plays a more visible postion, people will say that he is better.
Comparing players is fine, you can compare a lineman with another, or a RB with another, etc. 9/30/2006 10:51:13 PM |

you can always compare players of different positions by how well they play their position in relation to other plays in the same position. Such as LT is the #1 running back in the NFL, and compare him to Brett Farve who is just a top 5 QB in the NFL. 10/1/2006 2:05:58 AM |

Ray Lewis circa 1999-2003 was the most dominating player I had ever seen in football, he was EVERYWHERE on every damn play, either making the tackle or being the next player there just in case the guy broke the tackle. I could give a rats ass about Baltimore but love watching him.
As for right now I would say Manning or LT with a lot of other players really close in the second level 11/16/2006 1:51:22 AM |

yup. he's the best player in the NFL because he is most effective and will impact the game in such a way that makes him the best. Teams have to prepare to defend LT... im sure they're arent as focused on Rivers (tho he's my hero)11/16/2006 1:58:23 AM |

but also depends on the draft order, team style etc....
I would rather have Steven Jackson and Walter Jones or Hutchinson than LT and some shithead Offensive Lineman
but I agree, most people would pick LT (or Manning)

And he has earned the nickname. He is just as good a running back as Lawrence Taylor was a linebacker. 11/21/2006 3:24:24 PM |

Well that is a humorous retort. Seriously though, once he breaks Shaun Alexander's record in a few more games will he then earn the right to go by his initials?

This is a great point and that's why they make it. This is why the draft is so interesting...who knows the impact. As much as I like LT and how he's helping Rivers be the star he is, I think Manning has the most impact. I know when Manning and the offense walk on the field (except maybe against Dallas) the offense is going to move down the field and probably score...which is his purpose. A Manning completion seems to be a higher percentage than LT getting through a hole in the line, Hutchinson getting a pancake block, or Peppers rushing the QB (very close but not quite).11/21/2006 5:15:23 PM |
