a gateway mx7340 and a hp dv9074d. i want to move files from the gateway to the hp. i have a cat6 cable and tried connecting to the gateway but it doesnt read the connection. the help guide on the computer is telling me to select options for the network connection that are not available to me. when i run the files transfer wizard, it tells me to insert the windows xp disk to install some shit but i dont have a windows xp disk. i just got this laptop yesterday and i am sure it had no disk. i have no experience with networking so i have no idea what to do now. anyone know how to set this up? 10/2/2006 6:23:06 PM |

cross over cable router with regular ethernet cables or wireless burn CDs usb thumb drives infrared connection
really all depends how much data you have to transfer as to how much trouble you put into the means of transfer. are we talk about gigs and gigs of data (a big music collection, videos, tv shows, etc) or just normal documents and maybe some mp3s 10/2/2006 7:00:54 PM |

Wipe iPod Synchronize Computer A with iPod Synchronize Computer B with iPod
Otherwise, for that amount of data, would recommend setting up an FTP Server. Try VShell for something easy/simple. I don't trust Windows copy/paste for THAT much data. 10/2/2006 8:58:58 PM |

If you have them on the same LAN then remote desktop to the other machine. Before you connect check the box to share the local file system. Then you can drag and drop like normal. 10/3/2006 6:33:02 PM |

He could do that if he's got xp pro on one of the machines. The crossover cable will work just fine though.
Here's a step by step to get it over a crossover cable.
First, make sure you have run a crossover cable from the ethernet port of one machine to the other.
This part you'll need to do this on each machine. Go to start->settings->network connections then double click on "local area connection." Click on the advanced tab and then the settings button for the firewall. Turn it off.
Click on the "general" tab next. Make sure Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and Client for Microsoft Networks appear in the white box. If they don't then this isn't going to work. Select "tcp/ip protocol" in the white box and hit the properties button.
Select use the following ip adress and set the ip adress and subnet for each machine like this:
Machine 1:
IP Address: 192.168.10.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.000 Default Gateway: <<let this value default to whatever it chooses>>
Machine 2:
IP Address: 192.168.10.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.000 Default Gateway: <<let this value default to whatever it chooses>>
Don't worry abou the DNS settings. Click ok and save the changes.
Next, make sure both computers are set to the same workgroup. To do this, right click on "my computer" and select "properties." Go to the computer name tab and click "change" if they don't have the same workgroup. Now you can go to "my computer" and share any folder or drive you want by right clicking on it and selecting "sharing and security."
Copy the files you need. When done, go back to where you set the ip adress and put it back to being automatic. Also remember to turn the firewall back on and unshare whatever drives or folders you shared before connecting to the internet again.
If you have a router then you can do this by just-> disabling firewall, enabling shares, making sure they're on the same workgroup. Just connect each to the router with a normal ethernet cable and, barring the router being set oddly, it should be fine. Again, remember to unshare folders and turn the firewall back on after you get what you need.
