Seems that your esteemed commander in chief wanted to spend $20 million to celebrate the great victories in Iraq and Afghanistan:

Quote :
"Tucked away in fine print in the military spending bill for this past year was a lump sum of $20 million to pay for a celebration in the nation's capital "for commemoration of success" in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Not surprisingly, the money was not spent.

Now Congressional Republicans are saying, in effect, maybe next year. A paragraph written into spending legislation and approved by the Senate and House allows the $20 million to be rolled over into 2007.

The original legislation empowered the president to designate "a day of celebration" to commemorate the success of the armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, and to "issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.""

Is this the first part of the "Declare victory and go home" strategy?

true victory, if it is possible at this point, will not occur until after this administration (and possibly this congress) has turned over.

dumb move. its like having the plastic over the lockers and the champaigne corked when you're down 3 games to 1 in the 5th game of the World Series.

Even if you dislike tree, that's a pretty damned good post. Sure you can disagree that we're in the middle of the war or whatever, but that was pretty fucking funny.

Totally pwnt the whole previous metaphor.

well, my metaphor was based on the assumption that we have a hard road ahead, much like a team thats down 3-1 in a series.

unless we're in the 21st inning of game one, and we plan on staying in iraq till 2022.

I see, so winning the world series isn't a difficult road at all? You have to be down 3-1 before the going gets tough?

You both didnt post in the TSB with any frequency. And then out of the blue, you both exist here at the same time, with the exact same politics, and equal amounts of inability to form any sort of cohesive argument or stay on track with the discussion. You both arrive to tdub and leave at generally the same time every day, you both don't post much on the same days (9/30 and 10/1 for instance).

If I were to look at a post without the author, I couldn't tell if you wrote it or if he wrote it.

Why are you the same person?

pressure's a helluva lot harder down 2 games, one game away from losing the whole thing, than it is in game one.

unless you dont think the pressure's on bush and this admin. right now. based on popular opinion on iraq, id say it is.

id just like to point out jerrygarcia's blatent use of hyperbole with a failure to understand the process

if the fed govt wants to spend money for a celebration on the iraq war or afghanistan

the money has to be appropriated by congress beforehand,

it's not like bush just cuts a check the day before and gives it to an event planner

so they probably threw this in to one of the defense appropriation bills or maybe another (interior?) appropriations bill, with the idea that if the money wasn't needed quite yet, they would just strip it out in conference at the end of the year. or in this case, they created a condition in the bill language that allowed for it to not be disbursed as long as the "mission accomplished" goal has not been yet met.

i raise the point not as a supporter of the war necessarily, but to correct people's understanding of the process.

but really, even IF we "win" these wars one day, do we need to throw a $20 million dollar party for the politicians who didn't do shit anyway?

it would be a public celebration,

think of it analagous to a president's swearing in or something

and 20 million dollars ain't shit...

you have no concept of the defense budget if you're worried about this beyond jerrygarcia's attempted point at "CART BEFORE THE HORSE"
