My friend's sister sounds like him, (the raspy horse voice, doesn't sound like a dude though) She has a paralyzed vocal cord, so that is why she sounds like that.

my lacrosse coach in high school strained his voice so bad in boot camp his vocal chords never healed back - he was permamently hoarse...when i went through plebe summer at navy i strained mine to where i couldn't talk for two days straight - not even a whisper...they healed but i go hoarse after a quarter (half max) of cheering at football games
