These tires are airless and are scheduled to be out on the market very soon .
The bad news for law enforcement is that spike strips will not work on these tires.
This is what great R&D will do, and just think of the impact on existing technology:
a... no more air valves a... no more air compressors at gas stations a... no more repair kits

Nah you don't make them four times the price.
You make them one fourth as durable as they should be, so they bust a weld and require replacement (but you overbuild it enough so that it just looks broken, but would still hold up just fine).
[Edited on October 9, 2006 at 9:02 PM. Reason : They probably still have tread and wear like normal tires as well, they just don't get flat.] 10/9/2006 9:01:49 PM |

There are a TON of problems with these being used in passenger cars. They won't be showing up on any real cars anytime soon.
The biggest issue is how ridiculously harsh the ride is with them, second only to the extra punishment they put on a car's suspension system 10/9/2006 9:14:20 PM |

please elaborate, from what i've read, the tweel can be tuned to match the vertical and lateral spring rates of pneumatic tires.10/9/2006 9:52:23 PM |

obviously, this statement was made more than 3 years ago
my uncle road in a car with these tires last week...the course included potholes, rough road, concrete, dirt, and a rocky/sandy area, in addition to "normal" roads...he said the ride felt no different than any other
i would love to see these on cars, especially since i don't care what my tires/wheels look like2/16/2010 9:52:22 AM |

I would put these on my car in a hot minute. I really don't give half a dick about how my wheels look.
If these were so good, I would have expected to see them on military or fleet commerce vehicles well before they entered the consumer market. 2/16/2010 10:18:26 AM |

i'm still not quite sure why, in the more than 5 years since these were announced, we haven't heard any more...obviously, not all products are feasible, and perhaps that's the case here, but i don't know why they wouldn't be...maybe they don't hold up well over time?

Those cliches are so true! Where to start? It would be a lot easier if I knew what the first wheel ever was like. Stone or wood I guess? I bet leather tires were the fucking shit back in the day. Too bad we don't have to deal with bias ply anymore...
I'm sure it will shine in certain applications. As I recall the core is made of urethane which is very temperature sensitive as far as hardness goes. Thats probably a pain in the ass when you are trying to make all-season tires. 2/16/2010 12:03:32 PM |

I don't know why anyone would want anything but a block of hard rubber for a skid steer tire. Those spokes look too fragile.
For a car, I don't think you'd be able to fit big brakes. It would also be bad for stopping as the spokes spool. Retarded design. 2/16/2010 12:13:09 PM |

i think the challenge with any new ground breaking technology is releasing it without instantly destroying existing infrastructures.
i.e. tires that don't go flat = loss of businesses for 1) tire shops 2) towing services 3)gas stations etc. 2/16/2010 11:37:46 PM |
