so i was wondering if anyone knew how much televisions were marked up for retail? i have a friend whos uncle owns an electronic distributing company somewhere in the southeastern states and told me she could get me a tv for wholesale price. she talked to her uncle and he told her to tell me to let him know what size i wanted, features, price i was looking to spend, etc. i'm looking at 42in+ DLP or LCD televisions, preferably rear projection, sony, samsung, toshiba, etc. But i was wondering if anyone knew the markup on these tv's or could give me any info? thanks a lot 10/14/2006 8:42:06 PM |

depends. Can range from 5% to 50+%. Also he's at the second tier, bestbuy and other electronics companies are often at the third tier so expect to get even further.
Make a list of what you want and ask him. I suggest a sony wega is a DLP. 10/15/2006 10:31:18 PM |

I'll give you an example.
Sony 42" ED Flat Panel Plasma-Black FWD42PV1/B
Retail: $2399
Cost to Purchase for Retail Store: 1705.96
That's just ONE example though.
It'll vary from TV to TV.
(That's a 40.6% increase in price from the purchase cost for the retail store.) 10/16/2006 12:03:49 AM |

second, sony doesn't make consumer plasma panels anymore

third, ED has been virtually completely phased out.
Also, retail rule of thumb, mark up is 30%10/16/2006 12:08:18 AM |

He pulled that off one of our distributers sites to use as an example of typical markup between wholesale and suggested retail. That sony model is availible for sale to consumers from that distributer. Is it currently in production? Maybe not, but that doesn't make it any less an example of MSRP vs wholesale. Anyways, while your points are mostly correct, they're also completely irellevent to the discussion of tv markup. Please continue to be an ass though.10/16/2006 12:47:49 AM |

It is kind of annoying to hear SXRDs referenced as using DLP technology when they in fact dont.
I dont know why, but it gets kind of old. 10/16/2006 8:49:56 AM |

whups my bad. The Sony Wega's just look really nice. Was a slip up.
I've been looking mostly at LCD tv's myself. I really like the LG's I've been seeing but I might go with a DLP since I use it only for movies and games and I'd like a bigger screen. Not sure yet though. 10/16/2006 9:04:47 AM |

Using an outdated technology (ED plasma) as an example for retail markup on consumer electronics is rediculous.
A more pertinant example would be one of the most popular 42" HD plasma displays (panasonic, LG) which retails for $1999, but can commonly be found at B&M for <$1800. Usually the wholesale price for a B&M store is ~$1300. ~30% Markup for market price.

Well first, let's ignore the fact that places like Bestbuy, Sams Club, J&R Electronics, and Circuit City still carry an EDTV model or two. Markup rates don't nescesarily change because a technology is outdated, and if anything they'd go down. What's ridiculous is you talking out of your ass. There is no "rule of thumb" for retail markup on TV's. Each store will have its own markup scheme that will usually vary based on things like brand, target consumer, expect sale volume, and other factors. Actual markup will vary from 5% to 40% for current and past generation tv's alike. For example, J&R (a brick and motar retail store in NY) averages about 15% for most brands they carry and as little as 5% for off-brands like Olevia.

I'm just trying to say, most outdated tech is clearance... low margin.
According to panasonics website, the th42px60u MSRP is 2099
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?storeId=15001&catalogId=13401&itemId=96291&catGroupId=24973&modelNo=TH-42PX60U&surfModel=TH-42PX60U&cacheProgram=11002&cachePartner=7000000000000005702
regardless.... i don't trust NY stores. Yes you can find really good prices at random retailers, but overall... retail markup from my experience with TVs are around 30%. You can disagree with me, but I work with this, and i'm just telling you my personal experience. 10/16/2006 10:43:57 PM |
