"they were all lawfully owned"

bullshit.

but they shouldn't assume that the people have gotten them illegally. if the people have serial numbers, then i don't see a problem with the powers that be returning them.

it's not the government's place to assume that that items that have not been reported stolen are stolen.

but i do agree that only those that know the serial numbers should have theirs returned, otherwise there's no proof that at all of a claim of ownership, unless the cops documented each home that they removed weapons from and the claimant has proof that was their residence. in that case, unless the gun was reported stolen, it should be returned.

^ I agree with this

we cant just give the guns to any idiot who says he owned one. And if you own a gun and dont have the serial number documented then you dont diserve to have a gun.

well yeah, thats not even an issue

but the government stealing property is wrong... so what is one supposed to do to prevent this?

shoot them when they show up at your door? That might work for a few minutes but then you're gonna die when they roll a tank through your door.

it just sucks that the government is preventing law abiding citizens from owning a firearm

I guess those videos from new orleans of the cops confiscating firearms were right...

the american people have been conceding our constitutional rights since 2001. it's a shame that you are just now realizing it, now that theres not much you can do about it.

I realized that long before 01

and the people that made a big deal about rights being taken away post 9-11 seem not to care so much about other rights being taken away

rights don't matter if it hurts your agenda

that isn't what is happening, so stop trying to turn this into your broader "OMFG THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY THE SECOND AMENDMENT" bullshit

but, this is pretty fucked up. if they have the serial numbers of their guns, they should be given them back.

^^^ whats so funny about it?

do black people not have the right to hunt or protect themselves?

exactly, which is fucked up, but any of those people can go out and buy as many guns as their hearts desire. the government is not preventing them from owning guns. just preventing them from obtaining the guns they used to have, which is fucked up, yes.

ok, I'm sure those people in NO have enough money to go buy more firearms

some of those firearms can't be replaces by simply "buying more"

that's not the point

the point is, the government isnt preventing them from owning guns

the government is preventing them from getting back their old guns

which is fucked up...

it doesn't matter that they can buy more

the government stole property from it's citizens

it's even on video where troops and cops were going door to door disarming people

are you saying they were not trying to prevent firearm ownership then?

these people can't afford to just go buy another one...

this country was not founded on bullshit like that

if this was about the CIA listening in on phone calls from suspected terrorists some of the people here would be having a fit about "OMG VIOLATING RIGHTS"

like I've said before, I guess people pick and choose their rights instead of standing up for all of them... and guns are the only rights which truly protect the rest of them

anyways...quit being a douche and trying to pick apart the thread and change the subject

i think there's nothing wrong with them confiscating the weapons in a state of emergency. BUT, they should have logged the serial numbers and names and allowed the people to get them back at a later date when stuff had calmed down.

I see what you are saying and where you are coming from, but don't completely agree... because they were also confiscating them from sections of town that didn't have flood damage also

say if they had been removing them from destroyed houses to prevent looters and others from acquiring them at abandoned homes... thats one thing

but this is something else

fucking ray nagin

agreed

im not trying to change the subject. im trying to help you differentiate between this fucked up situation and OMFG THEY'RE AFTER THE SECOND AMENDMENT that you're constantly fixated on.

everyone has already agreed that its fucked up that these people cant get back their guns by presenting the serial numbers. but this isn't part of some huge conspiracy to take away your gun and prevent you from ever owning one.

this country was also not founded on bullshit like president bush signed into law today. it's fucked up that politicians can get away with so much bullshit and no one even bats an eye. we can agree on that much

I wasn't calling it a conspiracy asshole

it's on video that they were violating their rights from the beginning

but you're prick ass is like "well they can just go buy new ones!!!"

you go tell them that

and one of my main questions is... what prevents this from happening again?

^ no shit, I don't like the shit leaders do either, even this leader
I think ALL of our rights should be protected, but some people pick and choose whats important

look, dont mistake me for someone who wants to pick and choose rights or hates guns because im not that. infact, i love guns. been shooting since i was in middle school whenever i get a chance. we just disagree when it comes to how we feel the 2nd amendment is being protected.

i dont feel that the 2nd amendment, or anyone's right to own a gun, is threatened by this.

these people are still legally allowed to own guns. they can still go buy them. (their financial situation is irrelevant.)

they're just being prevented from getting their guns back. WHICH IS FUCKED UP. but, again, its not part of some larger movement to abolish the second amendment. just another dumbass move by a local government which has already been proven to be pretty incompetent

I would think that "states of emergency" might be exactly when you needed to protect yourself, since the police are no longer effective.
