Uninstalled it today and everything is running smoothly.

When it was installed the computer took forever to do ANYTHING. It was constantly acessing the HD and I would have to wait for the screen to move at each mouse click. It was pathetic.

this is a
P4 2.4 ghz with 2gb of ram running xp pro.

Byeeee Google Desktop!

i mean honestly if you keep a smart directory structure how hard is it actually to find your files?

Dumbest thing ever

It indexes your email (outlook)

And assumes that you are going to be very google-like with your email box

and not actually you know

file the messages away in different folders

so later, if you actually use it to try and search for your email

you'll find yourseld double clicking on email messages that it can't find, because it moved them, and doesn't track it

fucking worthless peice of google shit

to me

smart directory structure = a shitload of directories... having to click on 20 folders to find a file you KNOW is in there is all fine and dandy, but i'm not a fan... we have that structure on our network drive

I just type in part of the file name and bam! I'm there

Alright fag, stop with your pop culture pictures shit in Tech Talk. I might tolerate it on the work emails, but I won't stand for that shit here

I mean my sole reason for installing it was to quickly search my outlook inbox. Unfortunately my PC was worthless with it open.

Slightly on-topic ... does software (or filesystems) exist for an average consumer that can index files dynamically?

i use google desktop pretty much primarily for the 'gadgets.' i just hit shift-shift and i've got my calendar, to-do list, word of the day, weather and news. i rarely actually use the search function, although maybe i should. i dont mind or really notice any delays google desktop causes on my machine. i was always under the impression it didn't index until it detected you were idle for a certain amount of time anyway. also, i have it set to NOT index my emails and a lot of other things, so maybe that's helping me out.

I've never extensively used the Google Desktop, but isn't the search capabilities very similar to "Spotlight" on Mac OS X? I think it's cool and all that it can do it, but it actually takes me longer to type in search queries into the box than it takes me to find exactly the file I'm looking for.

I tend to keep my stuff pretty organized, so it's not difficult for me to find my stuff. And I do have a lot of documents, tens of thousands of different PDFs, PowerPoints, LaTeX, Word, text, etc type of documents.

I have used the searching every now and then on my emails, and I'll admit that it works quite well for that.
