I'm watching a program on History International (118 digital) called The Horrors of Hussein. I've known for years, of course, that he was a brutal dictator, but when you see some of the things he did to people. . .it's jarring. You see the skin peeling off the victims of Hussein’s chemical weapons’ attacks; they gasp for air and suffer greatly. Executions by firing squads. Mass graves. Horror.

This program may be old, but it's the first time I've seen it. If you want to get some idea of what kind of war criminal Hussein really is, watch this program.

Is there anything that needs saying? Your lame attempt at partisan bickering is failing.

Throw out your own little bait first, someone might bite, but it won't be me.

You're too stupid to engage in any sort of academic way.

There is nothing to argue. He was/is an evil person. He killed a lot of people using viscious tactics.

I don't know any liberal that will disagree.

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT YOU WERE DONE, YOU WENT AND OUTDID YOURSELF ON THE STUPIDITY LEVEL.

The shiites are taking revenge on the sunnis for years of brutalizing at the hands of the sunni dominated Baath party. Seems valid in the thread to me.

like abunch of black people getting killed in Sudan along with God knows what else throughout Africa, people in NK starving and getting sent to laybor camps and similar problems in China.

and Hussein gassed these people over a decade ago. So yes its a good history program but dont post this stuff to justify the war in Iraq. If you actually care about this and had feelings back in the 90's then good for you.

Time for a semantics battle over the term "worse".

How about, killing 200,000 is worse than 20,000?

The Horrors of Hussein will air again tonight (Friday) at 1 a.m. on History International (118 digital). I encourage everyone to watch it.

To all: I did NOT mean this thread to be bait for liberals to attack President Bush, nor did I mean for it to be a political ad in support of Bush. I'm telling you that I watched this documentary and I was shocked--jarred. I simply want people to watch it and make up their own minds. That is my only motivation here--I swear it.

whenever in the course of international events that we have supported a dictator, religious fanatic, or some entity whose long term values do not conincide with democratic values, it has backfired on us. it spans the globe - from Latin America to Southwest Asia. not only has it backfired on us, it has led to these kinds of atrocities on the population directly in contact with the said person/entity.

it is shameful. recent generations did not storm the beaches of Normandy and wheather the jungles of Indochina to have the men who sent them there support what they fought to defeat. i stongly believe in the Anglo-Yankee model of democracy, free markets, and free speech. i know its hard not to be opportunistic, but if we continue to support people and regimes that are not aligned with long term real democratic governance, it will backfire in unimaginable ways - the Vandals will sack and burn Rome once again.

First, I am not saying these situations are worse Im saying they are happening as we speak not in 1988.

Second, I am not taking a "so what" possition at all. Im taking a "this happened in 1988 and does not justify the Iraq war" possition. But regardless of the purpose of this thread Hussein is a horrible man and should have been removed over 15 years ago but wasnt and since then his power was diminished significantly up till the point we invaded.

also he didnt gas his own people, that would be like someone saying the US killing indians was the US killing its own people. YOU GAVE SMALL POX TO YOUR OWN PEOPLE OH NOES!!!!!!! so dont pull that emotional non-sense.

maybe so but they obviously didnt want it that way

Quote :
"Iraqi government began a new offensive against the Kurds and pushed them close to the border with Iran. Moreover, Iraq informed Tehran that it was willing to satisfy other Iranian demands in return for an end to its aid to the Kurds. With the mediation of the Algerian President Houari Boumédiènne, Iran and Iraq reached a comprehensive settlement in March 1975 known as Algiers Pact. The agreement left the Kurds helpless and Tehran cut supplies to the Kurdish movement. Barzani fled to Iran with many of his supporters. Others surrendered en masse and the rebellion was finished in a few days. As a result Iraqi government extended its control over northern region after 15 years and in order to secure its influence, started an Arabization program by moving Arabs to the oil fields in Kurdistan, particularly the ones around Kirkuk [8]. Th repressive measures carried out by the iraqi regime against Kurds after the Algiers agreement, led to renewed clashes between the Iraqi Army and Kurdish guerrillas in 1977. As a result in 1978 and 1979, 600 Kurdish villages were burned down and around 200,000 Kurds were deported to the other parts of the country [9]."
