The Statue of Zeus at Olympia is one of the classical Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was carved by the famed Classical sculptor Phidias (5th century BC) circa 435 BC in Olympia, Greece.

sit in the front row. dr packman is a little bit of a low talker. once you get used to it you can sit anywhere. but while getting used to it, go for the front row. infact i'd suggest you stay there since discussing epics, demi-gods, adventures, love stories, and mythology can be fun anyways. its like the king of reading i would do for entertainment, except it also comes with credit hours.

And then-but I beheld not, nor can tell,
What further fate befell:
But this is sure, that Calchas' boding strain
Can ne'er be void or vain.
This wage from justice' hand do sufferers earn,
The future to discern:
And yet-farewell, O secret of To-morrow!
Fore-knowledge is fore-sorrow.
Clear with the clear beams of the morrow's sun,
The future presseth on.
Now, let the house's tale, how dark soe'er,
Find yet an issue fair!-
So prays the loyal, solitary band
That guards the Apian land.

^^No.

Even though it is GRK/LAT 310, the entire course is in English. I never took it, but I had Dr. Packman for Latin 4 semesters. If I hadn't been in college for 5 1/2 years, I probably would have taken it.

I believe its offered every spring.

She's very nice about doing independent studies for her latin classes. If there were enough people who wanted this class at a semester its not usually offered, and were willing to work together to find a time they could all schedule for (probably an early morning thing) then she might consider it.

Well you could always watch out if a seat doesnt open up shortly before classes or in the first day or two. Classes always have a little shifting before they settle.

The current version of the town's seal, adopted in 1989, is in the process of being replaced with a similar but simpler version. All versions of the seal, dating back to the 1930s, depict Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and protector of cities

The classics department at UNC has its own building, full of many rooms that have big screens. And some with staggered seating. Knowing classics grad students to keys to that place have made for many a good drunken private movie viewing.

Being that I'm into mythology, its fairly obvious that I'd be into this show. Which has more to it than space ships, and explosions. The classics references, the landscape, music, and reflections on serious issues make for an interesting show even in a scene devoid of anything typically sci-fi.

(battlestar - a 2:40 sec clip from season 1)

I've seen them as they come out on dvd, so I'm not update, so hopefully no one will throw in spoilers in this thread.

But watching it on a big screen with surround sound in the largest building devoted to classics in this state was rather enjoyable.

the song there without the scene can be heard here.

http://voleuse.freeservers.com/MUSIC/Battlestar%20Galactica%20-%20Passacaglia.mp3

i post it seperately, just b/c its a really good piece of music, and its designed for a show that has greco-roman mythology as a center piece.

So far I've let this thread slide more to the greek side, but it is greco-roman mythology, so:

http://www.us.oup.com/us/companion.websites/0195153448/studentresources/chapters/?view=usa

This site, an online companion to the book, with the chapter summaries and practice quizes combined with going to class could get you a pretty decent grade for the class without ever spending any real time studying or reading the passages.

Although the subject matter is interesting enough that I think its worth reading. But if you're sick or have to miss a day of class, or can't do a reading during the week for whatever reason, its a great catch up tool.

You might want to bookmark it now if you're taking the class.

I think its usually only taught once each spring, so you guys taking it this spring will be the next people to have taken it after me.

People interested in this thread might also be interested in the thread on the classics club.

It died out after 2 semesters when all its members graduated at once so there was no one to keep it going. But the advisors, the forms, and everything needed is set up if anyone ever wanted to recreate it. Packman is one of the clubs advisers.

I believe Dr Packman said it could be either Zeus or Poseidon as they were depicted the same except for what they held. And the lightning bolt or trident is missing from this statue.

Now is the time to start watching it on tracs, ppl will probably ahve some switching up to do between now and the first few weeks of school.

Since this is only a spring class thats only offered once a year, best to keep an eye out.

Looks like grk 102 has some spaces left.

And several latin classes have space too.

http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/reg_records/tracs_bk/sprg/courses/LAT.html

HI 404 001 ROME TO 337 A D

Has 1 restricted seat left. I suppose its first meeting this semester will be in about 4 and a half hours.

PHI 300 001 ANCIENT PHILOSOPHY
Doesn't have any seats left, but would be worth trying to squeeze into. It wouldnt have met yet this semester. As might be several of the hi 207's ancient history classes that are offered this semester.

Or any english class 220, 221, or 222 all go into detail about ancient topics. (Dr Hunt & Kellner are good for any eng course).

Yeah, I regret not finding out about this class until recently when it was already full. I was hoping that an opening would come about but it hasn't . I had a fantastic latin teacher in high school that would delve into mythology (the Roman and Greek, although it was off topic) pretty consistantly. It was the most positive and enjoyable learning experience I ever had, so I'm bummed that I lost out on the chance to take this class this semester.

it comes again every spring, and if a large enough group got together she might consider an independent study... she does tons of classes that shes not paid for just to be nice to students who are interested in learning.
