Why does everyone here hate UNC. I don't get it, they beat us in everything. I haven't ever met anyone going there, but I guess they're just normal people. So what's the big deal with the rivalry?

I don't really hate UNC, but I'm not from NC.

The thing I've noticed is that most State students from NC hate UNC more than anything; while most State students from.. say the Northeast.. hate Duke more than anything. I fall in to the latter group.

Yeah, they beat us in everything. Recently.

Check the history and the tradition. It's an age-old thing dating back to the founding of the schools. They have been in opposition since the beginning.

And currently, they're different people from us. I hung out(and still do) in Chapel Hill quite often, but the people there for the most part are awful. They're arrogant, snobby, mostly uber-liberal, and the opposite of the typical State grad.

It's a rivalry, but one with a long and storied tradition and definitely has it's reasons.

Ok, before I moved to NC, before I really knew a damn thing about State, I hated Carolina just because EVERYONE wore their shit, they were like the Yankees and Raiders of college sports. So, when I was little, I actually started to like State just because they hated UNC, even though at the time I had NO connection to State.

Then I moved here, started working/grad school at State and the hatred has grown exponentially...

I knew one UNC fan when I lived in CT. Cool kid. I knew many Duke fans. They were the insufferable ones.

I must say that UNC alums, majority are very respectable people...its just some brainwashing in the early years that make them wierd until they get in the real world. UNC = Yankees who "grew up" in NC because their families moved here from up North. These people usually call themselves "North Carolinians" or "Southerners" just as Americans would call themselves "Indians" if they dressed up in leather and feathers and walked around saying "How"
Also, most UNC students score considerably lower in subjects such as math and science so they make up for this by declaring superiority in art history, journalism and political science (which are all as subjective as "Peace War and Politics" which is a major there)

Duke = Same as above except these idiots are rich

NC State = The majority of your REAL North Carolinians, as well as a true International student body with a better grasp on reality than the pampered, suburban Collombine types over in CHapel Hell...

as has been mentioned, the air of the supposed pre-established superiority is the biggest insult - a lot of them look right down their noses at you and your university, mvemsjsnup

the lack of connection with anyone/anything from duke for the most part might be why i don't have as big a problem with them. i remember reading something saying that only 9% of duke undergrads are actually from north carolina... everybody knows at least a few people that they grew up with who go to carolina, and i think state and carolina grads have way more contact with eachother after graduation as well, and i think that feeds it a lot- that's not always the case with duke

That's exactly what I meant in my first post. Those of us who grew up in the Tri-State area (CT, NY, NJ) came in to contact with far more Duke fans and alums growing up than UNC fans. Those who grew up in NC obviously came in to contact with far more UNC fans and alums growing up.

My distaste for Duke fans is certainly based on that. As with every group, of course, there are Duke fans who are good people, just as their are UNC fans who are good people..

Carolina used to be a joke compared to us in Basketball back in the 70's and 80's. We would wipe the damn floor with them. The real rivalry back then was between us and Maryland. Sports always goes back and forth, no one is ever "always" beating someone. Also Carolina is a joke of a football school compared to State. Id say the reason we hate them is because they are the competing public college with us. They are liberal, we are conservative. They are Arts and Social Sciences and we are Engineering. They are gay, we are straight. They are diverse, we are white. I mean what more do I need to tell you?

I wouldn't worry too much about the UNC students. I graduated in 2004 and have quite a few old highschool friends that went to UNC. I've noticed a strong correlation to UNC graduates working as waiters/waitresses with their Art Degree after graduation and NC State graduates working in RTP with their Engineering Degrees. There are a FEW exceptions. Then the State alum go to the Chili's after work and have the UNC grads bring them food. Then we tip them out of pity so that they can make a living while they think about where to find a real job criticizing paintings and writing haikus.
