math - the entire basis of the 'world' in the book is advanced calculus. they use math to bring order to chaos, etc. main character (D-503) is a math teacher at the school. their class project is designing a rocket ship for the Great Benefactor.
self-knowledge - D-503 falls in love with I-330. she is a member of a resistance group. through her and their group he discovers he is, in fact, a homosexual catholic priest. he comes to learn that the perfect world in which he lives is not so perfect anymore. they want to lead the people out of the glass dome and into the great beyond.
in the end, he is recaptured by the gov't and brainwashed (they call it 'removing a splinter' meaning his soul) back into being a heterosexual math teacher. he then sabotages the class project. there is/was much debate over what zamyatin meant with this ending.
that should get you started. really expand on the homosexuality and use of advanced calculus and you should be able to get 5 pages easy. good luck.

This is all evident if you've read it. Maybe you should try doing that in the future.
Also, this book is a million times better than 1984. 10/30/2006 5:10:46 PM |

I dont have to write a paper or anything i just have to find this for an informal group presentation which i dont even think is part of our grade for the class. I went to the NCSU bookstore and Addams and this book is sold out in both places so im pretty much screwed as i needed it for wednesday. Thanks again though for your post as im sure it will help me bs my way through the group work. 10/30/2006 5:43:36 PM |

I don't understand. Why don't you go read it at D.H. Hill. Search for ISBN: 0380633132
It's a terrific book. 10/30/2006 6:42:34 PM |

I am planning on reading it i just dont have the time to read the entire book in 48 hours especially since my cool Genetics professor wants to give us the hardest exam of the semester the day after Halloween. I needed this information by Wednesday as our group is sharing our ideas with the class and my part was how "mathematics and self-knowledge are defined in the novel". 10/30/2006 7:41:02 PM |

so we had to meet with our groups today and i am glad someone in my group caught this or i might have looked like a complete idiot in front of the class

so i found out this is totally not true and if i were to say it my professor and the rest of the class would have probably laughed and i would have been owned. whtmike2k if you put that in there to try and f me over then mad props cause it almost worked and i almost looked like a noob. Thanks though for everything else you wrote as my group said it was all valid and did in fact happen in the novel. Later biatches.11/1/2006 1:50:37 PM |
