Well, last year it worked for the NL East. Got to set the bar higher now.
Latest news is that Glavine is close to signing a 2 year, incentive laden deal with the Mets that will take him to the end of his career. With Pedro out until the break in '07 this is a good first step in the offseason. He has shown no real signs of wear and they can trust him in the postseason, which is how I imagine this team will be built for 2007. 11/1/2006 11:23:30 AM |

Least your team has a chance unlike the guy that made the Philies thread.
The Mets should be the favorites next year with their lineup, especially if Oliver Perez pitches well. 11/1/2006 11:26:25 AM |

Mets signed Alou to a 1 year, $7.5MM deal. I like it. Stopgap to Gomez or Fernando Martinez, both of whom will be equal prospects to Milledge. It allows Milledge to be used in a deal for a pitcher either preseason or midseason.
Also they traded two minor league relievers for Jason Vargas and another 23 year old lefty starter in AAA. Stockpiling young arms for sure. 11/20/2006 5:57:32 PM |

^^^ lol, that was widely regarded as one of the better deals this offseason to date. 1 year, market value for the production, and addresses a weakness (hitting against LHP).
Anyway, ESPNRadio out here said the Mets offered Zito 6 years $105MM
Well, they said it was 'reported' that they did... so who knows?

^^ lol, the rotation isn't any worse than last year. In case you forgot we ran train over the entire NL East. The divison was over by the start of May.
Plus, the bullpen is actually BETTER. Healthy Duaner, Heilman comfortable with his role, Juan Padilla back healthy for middle relief, Schoenweiss signed, Feliciano coming off his best year, Vargas as the long man, Wagner acclimated to NYC..
Don't sleep on Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber, both of whom will be better than Trachsel and whatever scrub we found on the streets to be our 5 last year (Gonzalez, Lima, Dave Williams, etc)...

Hiram Kyle Davies is his full name? WTF..
Davies was a high school draft pick from the 3rd or 4th round (??) and Pelfrey/Humber were both Top 5 picks who went to top level colleges and performed. Humber probably won't be in the rotation, but Pelfrey DOMINATED the minors and looked decent in his first go around in the bigs..
I'm fully confident he'd be an upgrade at 4 or 5... 1/12/2007 12:34:01 PM |

I think the thing I'm looking forward to the most is seeing if Rick Peterson can turn around Ollie Perez and get him back to what he can be. I read an article on SNY.tv this morning that was pretty good... He gained back all his lost velocity in only 4 weeks with an organization that knows how to handle it's pitchers (the Pirates are known for fucking up young pitchers recently)..
I think he can be a very solid 15 win pitcher this year... 1/24/2007 5:24:00 PM |

Pedro
Quote : | ""I'll probably be better than people have seen at Shea. According to what the doctors say, I should be coming back stronger and throwing harder."" |
Pedro's Trainer:
Quote : | "“Pedro will be brand-new, the Pedro of maybe '97. It is my challenge, to build Pedro the old Pedro way. The old Pedro form…Pedro will again have the power in the fastball.”" |
Those quotes make me giddy. I was one of the fortunate that saw Pedro pitch a bunch of home games in his antagonistic prime. There was never a better pitcher in this era for that 6 year period. Maybe in baseball history. If he can get back to HALF that it is going to be something to see. The best trading deadline acquisition of the year will be Pedro Martinez returning to the rotation book it.
Shea is going to be crazy the first game he pitches this year...
Quote : | "At his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin checks in with a few photos from Tradition Field, including one displaying the team’s new spring training jerseys.
Rubin points out that this year’s order for Rotation Row…
“Tom Glavine's is on the end, followed by John Maine and Oliver Perez. The rest of the row…contains Orlando Hernandez, an empty locker, and then Pedro Martinez.”
…it’s a nice visual for pitchers like Chan Ho Park, Mike Pelfrey, Aaron Sele and Phil Humber, as they can now literally see the openings in the team’s rotation… " |
Good. No rotation spot guaranteed for Park. Please to win the 5th spot Pelfrey or Humber!

Everyone reported today. Anyway, Reyes added 7 pounds of muscle; and Milledge added 13 pounds of muscle!
Here's how I would set things up come opening day if I had a say
1 SS Reyes 2 C Lo Duca 3 CF Beltran (who btw said his goal is to win MVP and the World Series) 4 1B Delgado 5 3B Wright 6 LF Alou 7 RF Milledge -> Green will likely be the starter 8 2B Valentin
1 SP Glavine 2 SP El Duque 3 SP Maine 4 SP Perez 5 SP Pelfrey -> it will almost certainly be Park
Bullpen is still stellar with Heilman, Sanchez, and Wagner forming the best 7-8-9 in baseball (well maybe 2nd best behind LAofAAAofAAofAnaheim). Rotation is certainly the weakness but I think Perez can be effective with Rick Peterson's guidance..
