The idea is to revisit the location of old photographs and take identical photographs, as if the camera never moved and the world changed around it. It's a little more difficult than I expected due to variations in lenses, inaccessibility of locations and a lack of constant markers.

Nice job. What's that tall thing on Tompkins Hall (#5)? 11/2/2006 5:29:53 PM |
Pyro Suspended 4836 Posts user info edit post |
Tompkins had a tower before it burned in the 1920's(?) The kept the brick shell when they rebuilt the building, but the tower got chopped.
Here's a photochop by ArcBoyeee:
-------------------------------------- Nevermind, it was for a water tower, burned in 1914...
Quote : | "The original Tompkins Hall was the first textile building on campus, designed to resemble the latest turn-of-the-century cotton mills. Electrical power on the campus was not strong enough to operate the building's equipment, which included carding and spinning machines on the top floor, looms and warp preparations on the ground floor, and dyeing equipment in the basement. The building was destroyed by fire in 1914, and its successor reveals the continued influence of industrial architecture. However, the rebuilt Tompkins Hall displays Renaissance motifs in its high ceilings, central tower, roof brackets, and repeated pattern of white-outlined windows. A tower on the new Tompkins, intended to hold a water tank, was never used and, until 1928, displayed the numerals of the senior class each year. The tower was finally shortened and the building was renovated in 1981 for the humanities and social sciences. " |
So I don't really know what the original Tompkins looked like. Maybe I've confusing the fire photos I've seen of Pullen Hall.

how weird would it to be to have it life size and kinda in 3d 11/2/2006 6:18:25 PM |

lol. somebody in the design school told me once but I forgot. Like an egg or something. oh well.
also why the hell are there no trees in old pictures around state? Did they used to think it was a good idea to chop down every tree in sight a long time ago?
Nice work.

Probably because you also realize that one day everything you see, know and love will disappear just like it did for these people. Who cares if a few buildings are still standing in a few decades? Every past moment of your life will already be long gone. So, umm, enjoy it. Or buckle down and make it count. Or drink more. I'm not really sure where I was going with this. Ooooh! Here's my guess as to why there are no trees in the old photos:
The old photos are probably from around the time the buildings had just been built, in which case the land was probably cleared for the construction, and over time the trees have been planted and grown back. My guess is they didn't have the techniques to keep the trees or else didn't think about trying to keep them, so they got rid of all of them at the time.

^^Yea man..I'm currently getting my images from http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/specialcollections/eresources/digitalimages.html (Search the database...) but I wouldn't mind seeing what you have as well.
I've shot more of these, but they don't line up well enough yet. I'll have to take some more when I can.
I'd like to do more of these around Raleigh, but I don't have as many hi-res originals and my knowledge of the area is limited. 11/3/2006 10:08:20 AM |
