The college basketball Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings went out today and it has 5 ACC teams in the top 25 (NC State, Duke, GT, Maryland, and Clemson) with NC State having the highest RPI ranking in the ACC and the only ACC team in the top-10 with a #5-#7 (multiple sources) overall ranking out of 336 Div. 1-A teams.
A RPI ranking is important because it is the 2nd most determining factor into getting into the NCAA tourney besides winning the conference championship...
RPI ranking is calculated from the following...
The weights are 25% winning percentage, 50% Strength of Schedule, and 25% opponent Strength of Schedule.
So, the basic RPI formula is 1/4*(Winning Percentage) + 1/2*(Opponents' Average Winning Percentage) + 1/4*(Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage)
Multiple sources of State's ranking are linked below...

^^ Well, actually, considering the toughness of our conference and how we play (we should be able to keep a top 25 RPI starting out so high)
It's also the highest we've started out in RPI since like the D. Thompson days... 11/25/2006 2:27:52 AM |

but ... our win last night will bring us down since their winning percentage will skew the other teams (they are now 0-3 i believe) 11/25/2006 7:17:02 AM |

Yeah, Gardner-Webb is ranked 326 through Thursday. That's really going to drag us down. 11/25/2006 9:19:46 AM |
