how does it work if you have a game in your xbox console and a DVD in your dvd drive....which one will auto-start? or will it just go to the dashboard? 11/27/2006 10:43:06 AM |

it will autostart whichever one you used last i believe...i just set mine to boot to the dashboard and the little icon at the bottom where you click "Play Game" has that on the top and "Play DVD" on the bottom so you can always keep a game and a DVD in each drive for convenience 11/27/2006 3:22:16 PM |

It works fairly well.
True HD tracks have horrid audio sync issues (although that is somewhat of an HD-DVD trademark all around)
Powerdvd should be released with hd support in spring, which would allow you to use it as a simple external drive on a PC.
Keep in mind there are absolutly no movies out that you would want to own. Yes...we've all seen riddick.....4 times. 11/27/2006 6:31:48 PM |

There really aren't any good movies on BlueRay or HD DVD. 11/27/2006 10:56:57 PM |

I was torn between asking for this or the steering wheel for christmas from my folks. I went with the steering wheel. I'll probably get more use out of it. 12/18/2006 11:20:23 AM |

Honestly Quinn, your argument about only buying 2 movies thus making them cost $100 each is quite silly. I think everyone else would agree that if you were not planning on buying any movies in the future, you would be crazy to just buy the player and the two movies. But obviously there will be more movies in the future that you will buy. 12/18/2006 1:38:34 PM |

^^ Psh, I'm waiting for "The Postman" to come out on HD-DVD. By far the best of the shitty costner post-apocalyptic movies. 12/18/2006 1:51:15 PM |

Other things coming in the future will surely include:
Price drops on the player Price drops on the discs
Is the HD-DVD drive good to own right now if you intend on buying a whole bunch of HD-DVDs now? Yes.
Is it a good idea to buy now when you're just going to buy two HD-DVDs and then wait god knows how long for other good movies (or movies worth the price premium of DVD -> HD-DVD) to actually come out (assuming the format survives that long)? Probably not.
If you're not going to get your money's worth out of it now, there's no point in buying it for the future - unless you're snagging it for real cheap.

Not likely to be much reduction in the player, as both Toshiba and Sony are selling their drives/players at massive losses already.
Which leads into the probability that prices wont be dropping on the discs anytime soon either.
But who cares, because Netflix is already stocking both formats for rental. 12/18/2006 3:15:23 PM |

blockbuster already has both formats to rent online as well. 12/18/2006 3:38:36 PM |

Toshiba cant possibly be losing much money. Did you take one apart and search for your prices on digikey in quantities of 1 or what?

i have the mission impossible trilogy, polar express, king kong, apollo 13, eagles farewell tour, fearless (preordered), and batman begins and i'm really happy with the hd dvd player...the interface and special features are worth the purchase.
think of it this way...you can get most hd dvds for the same price as the dvd in a lot of cases if you buy it online (amazon, deepdiscountdvd, best buy, or circuit city). You can get the hd dvd add on for $181 at sam's club. the benefit of the cool interface, better sound and picture, and additional features is worth at least $7 extra to me. so if you bought 26 dvds eventually...you'd be better off with hd dvd. i have over 600 normal dvds and i'm sure that my hd dvd collection will grow really fast and it's already a worthwhile investment to me and all those who've watched it.
if you have an hd tv and buy a couple movies a month (not to mention that both blockbuster and netflix rent hd dvd)...i don't see how the 360 add on isn't a very feasible investment. the shortcomings of the playstation 3 also add a little security to the purchase because it's not going to ramp up nearly as fast as sony "promised" and if they continue to have problems blu-ray will be grouped with the ps3 because they are directly correlated to promote each other. 12/18/2006 6:50:42 PM |

Are you having audio sync issues with the true hd tracks? 12/18/2006 6:52:57 PM |
MOODY All American 9700 Posts user info edit post |
i haven't had any sync issues with the dvds i've watched...i've hooked it up via component (if you read avsforum they recommend using vga since it upconverts for 1080p...my tv is 720p native so i dunno if that will benefit me) and audio is a separate optical cable to a harmon kardon receiver.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=726038 is a very good resource that i think i recall reading some solutions for audio sync problems 12/18/2006 6:57:55 PM |

ive used both component and vga. i also tried both the HK receiver I have and a friends Onkyo.
turn on dolby truehd and watch batman for awhile. 12/18/2006 7:02:45 PM |

trying true hd now with batman
Quinn...bruce is climbing up the mountain now and in the slow scenes i paid VERY close attention to the audio and their lips and verified it was on True HD in the settings and mine is dead on. is there a time when you first noticed this or was it from the get go?

i watched it when the addon drive first came out and noticed it. may have been when i was switching tracks around back and forth checking certain scenes. i would go check it, but i have no desire to see any part of that movie again (ive seen it on an hd-a1, dvd, theater, and xbox hd-dvd).
[Edited on December 18, 2006 at 7:21 PM. Reason : maybe a live update fixed it. ill try another movie later] 12/18/2006 7:21:03 PM |

i know for a fact that the first live update with the hd dvd add on was to fix issues with launch hd dvd titles (which would include batman begins). i've been extremely pleased with my new tv and hd dvd, now i just need my own house so i can upgrade my speakers and go from 5.1 to 7.1 12/18/2006 7:28:31 PM |
